i've been up since 4:30a.m. Mountain Time, standard for me. i love my morning me time, have for decades.
My favorite John Wayne bit was the turning away saying "I'm not gonna hit ya.", then turning back saying "Aww, the hell i'm not" as he punches the bad guy. i often think of it when someone online is being an ass and i'm working very hard to inform how much of an ass without quite stooping to their level. ('I'm not gonna call you what you are', "aww.."

Now here's a pickle - I go to the phone company office to arrange a transfer of my phone to my new address. The only free agent is one who speaks with a Spanish accent so thick I can hardly understand her - then she has to leave for an emergency with her son and turns me over to another agent, who is taking care of me until a Spanish-only-speaking customer comes in and the agent I'm working with turns me over to ANOTHER agent that I have TO WAIT IN LINE for because the agent I was working with is the only one left in the office who can speak Spanish, and is only supposed to handle Spanish-speaking customers when they are present. WHY COULDN'T THAT SPANISH-SPEAKING CUSTOMER JUST WAIT THEIR TURN!!
John Wayne. I can't help but blame him for creating so many veterans. He was the icon for Americans kicking ass. I guess he is still an icon for those who think America is what it was.
In Vietnam we had these little can openers that could fit on a key chain or in you wallet and they opened those C-rations of food. We called them John Waynes.
I loved the guy, too. Always riding off into the sunset heading for the next adventure while everyone else had to stay and keep civilization going.

I enjoyed John Wayne's movies before he became an "icon". Especially "Red River" even with the dumb ending and even some of his "B" westerns. However, after he became an "icon", he thought he had to deliver some sort of message in his films. He did that really well in "The Searchers", a very scenic exercise in racist claptrap. All those savage and ignorant Indians having the nerve to "invade" the white man's new sandbox and object to John Wayne's heroic search for poor, kidnapped Natalie Wood, who looked more as if she were kidnapped by L.L. Bean. Anyway, it did inspire me to visit Monument Valley where I felt guilty and stupid when I spoke to the Native-Americans who live there.
popron....I remember those little C-ration openers.
But for what it's worth....John Wayne never served in the military.

John Wayne was born in 1907 & was a product of his times (as we all are); his movies reflect that. His first hit was Stagecoach made in 1939 - yeah, that was a looong time ago.
Here's something interesting: John Wayne's three marriages were all to Hispanic women. His first wife was Josephine Saenz. They were married from 1933-44 &had four children - Michael, Toni, Patrick, and Melinda. Two years after the divorce he married again to Esparanza Baur; they had no children together &split up in 1954. In that same year he wed again to Pilar Pallete, & they had three children - Alissa, John Ethan, & Marisa. They broke up in 1973, & he never married again.
All his children are half-Hispanic. I'm guessing he probably had no problem with Spanish speakers. I wonder what he, personally, would think of the above graphic? I guess we'll never know.
