I found this group and thought I'd simply share my story....at 43, I was happily going about smoking my three packs a day! But also there were times I would wake up with coughing fits. This continued for awhile until I endured a coughing fit that went on for nearly an hour. During this, I couldn't breathe much and when I finally settled down, I looked at my wife and told her that if I didn't do something fast, I wouldn't see my kids graduate from high school!
So, THAT DAY, I stopped....cold! I went to Walgreen's and bought the nicotine patches, but ended up only using three of them. The point of the story? I was scared out of my mind by that final episode, enough to make me stop and I never looked back.
I hope that maybe some inspiration comes from this, I don't know. Was it hard? Actually, not really..and it's been 11 1/2 years now...

Hi and welcome, Wolfie. Thank you so much for sharing your story with us. We are in various stages here of our quits. Quite a few have many months under their belts, some have a year or more, and some, like me, are still struggling to quit.
I got a chill down my spine about your coughing fit because I am just getting over bronchitis and I've had some terrible coughing fits that go on and on. My doctor told me that my smoking days are over, so he put me on a program where I smoke 2 less a week than the week before. This week is my quit week, and I'm not smoking 2 a day, I'm just smoking like 10 a day. I just couldn't do his program.
So, either Thanksgiving day or the day after is my goal.
But hearing your story really screams at me, so thanks for stopping by to share it. :-)
