Gas furnace trouble

Hi , I'm Tina . Today my gas furnace dicided to stop working. When I turn it on it makes a click sound in order to start the fan. The fan doesn't start , there is a faint gas smell and then another click ( similar to the sound of the first click ) . Then nothing happens. This happens in about 20 - 30 seconds . I can wait until tomorrow to have it checked and repaired but in the meantime I'm wondering if I should turn the Gas off . I have already turned down the furnace and shut it off with the power switch ( looks like a light switch) in the furnace room . I just want to know if it would be safer to turn the gas off . Does anyone have any knowledge furnaces ????

I can't help you with the gas furnace. But me, I'd turn it off. Better safe than sorry.

is this propane or natural gas? propane gas has an odor to it shortly just before it runs out. just a thought if you're sniffing gas.

Most states require gas utility companys to come out on a gas leak call 24/7 365...call them...don't wait...

Gas furnace, steam or hot water circulation? Both may cause the furnace to fail. Check your water, steam has a "elevation tube" to show the water lever, I dont know about circulation guages except they have seperate pumps that MUST be running to allow furnace to stay on Suggest more info ,or,check yourself.
Low water level (steam) No circulation pump- NO FURNACE Need more info plz tDuck

I have a natural gas furnace and I believe it circulates air not water or steam. I live on Vancouver Island on the west coast of Canada near Seattle , Washington. It seems I didn't explain my problem clearly..after the second click sound the gas stopped leaking , otherwise I would have escaped quickly and called my gas Co. emergency number right away.

I have turned off the gas and now I am waiting for the serviceman to arrive.
.It's around 8 C or 48 degrees here in Victoria today and I am keeping warm by using my Di-humidifer to warm the air , I'm surprised to see how well it works ....
Thanks for the wonderful advice , it feels so comforting to have you near by, thanks to the internet !

Hello Tina,
If your gas furnace is a relatively newer model, it will have either a hot plate or spark ignition system. When the thermostat calls for heat, the ignition circuit will go on (one of those clicks).
If the main burner does not ignite in 15 seconds the main gas valve will shut down (second click).
If that occurs, you might get a slight smell of gas.

There can be many causes of this.
1 -- Inoperative or defective hot plate or spark igniter.
2 -- Defective Main gas valve.
3 -- Defective control panel.
4 -- Broken or corroded wire connection.
5 -- Low pressure coming from the main gas line.

These are only the basics. I hope this helps

Tina,I hope your problem is a simple part malfunction! I have had that problem with the spark igniter on my oven. I had to ligh it by match until the new part arrived. You don't want to have to do that everytime your furnace turns on! Good luck.

Thank you Joel and otter1944 I appreciate the info. My furnace is working now , turns out it was the spark igniter ...good to have it working again , I wouldn't have attempted to light a match ...I'm not as brave as you otter1944 ...!! warm and cosy Tina
