What is some of your special memories of Thanksgiving. Did you go to your grandparents home? Was there any special traditions your family always carried out on Thanksgiving?

Well I remember all my moms brothers & sisters going to my grandmothers house of Thanksgiving Day, one or two of my uncles glued theirselves to the tv to watch football games. It was a lot simpler time back then, now seems like nobody gets together. Since my grandparents have all passed away, I'll just probably go to my nephews home on Thursday, like I did last yr.

We always went to my paternal grandparents for Thanksgiving. It was always a wonderful time, The wonderful smell of, Grandmas fresh homemade bread, and the turkey. And they always had a big ham. Fresh cow butter and fresh milk to drink. The one Thanksgiving, that really stands out in my mind. Was the year my uncle came home from Vietnam. I don't remember there ever being anyone watch the tv. The family was always to busy visiting. The only time, my grandpa watched tv, was at 5 pm, and that was the world news. I see so many kids today, that go to restaurants to have the Thanksgiving meal, to me this is so sad. Yes, times were simpler then, I think families were a lot closer then.

THE BONE

We usually all gathered at our grandmas and grandpas house. Aunts, uncles, cousins, the whole bunch. But, I do have a funny memory I would like to share.
My uncle used to hunt a lot when he was able to. It seemed like he would always miss Thanksgiving dinner, because deer season usually was still going on during Thanksgiving and he was out hunting. So one year I decided well, I will save him something so he won't go hungry. I got a turkey bone out of the leg...those are big bones. So I cleaned it up real good and gave it to him for Christmas. I wrapped it up in a pretty package. On the bone I wrote, I saved this for you because you were not here for Thanksgiving Dinner, so now maybe you won't get hungry! LOL So the very next Christmas I got a package from him...opened it up and there was the Bone!!! So that went on for about 10 year. I got the bone last and he had made a coffin for it! And said he thought it was time to put the bone to rest!!!! LOL I still have the bone. That thing is 38 year old now!!!!! LOL But that was a fun tradition between me and my uncle.

Here is a picture of the Bone, the side of the coffin and then a pic of the poor old bone at rest. LOL

Wow that was some tradition Silverowl! So neat. I have wonderful memories of going to my meemaw Mimis. That is what all us kids called her Meemaw Mimi. LOL She would always make the biggest stock pot full of chicken and dumplins for Thanksgiving. She would use 2 chickens. But her chicken and dumplins were just out of this world! LOL We usually didn't have turkey. But Meemaw Mimi could also make fry bread that would melt in your mouth! That usually consisted of our desserts at Thanksgiving. Fry Bread just as soon as it came out of the hot oil and sprinkle powdered sugar on top!! Either that or honey swirled on top. My memories of that time warms my heart to think of them.

silverowl you got me to thinking about something, yrs ago all my uncles & dad went out rabbit hunting on Thanksgiving day. I think it may have been some kind of competition to tell the truth about it, they were trying to see who could bag the most rabbits. That went on every year they either came out here to this farm I live on or went somewhere else. That was their holiday tradition or Thanksgiving Day Hunting competition.

We always went to granny and gramps! Oh, the food was delicious, and the gossip we would all get caught up on, those were wonderful times! Things don't seem the same anymore, I guess that comes along with getting older.

OH Silverowl!!! Your bone story just CRACKS me up girl!!! LOL So funny!! I come from a large family. I have 3 brothers and two sisters. We would always go to my maternal grand parents a week before Thanksgiving because they lived close by. Then we would travel about 50 mile on Thanksgiving day to go to my Paternal grandparents. It was always a lot of fun getting together. So many kids at both sets of grandparents!!! I think if I had of been grandma, I would have just wrung my hands and ran out the door and kept on running. LOL But both my grandmothers were just angels. I miss them dearly and my gramps too!

We always stayed home on Thanksgiving. Seemed like everybody always ended up at our house anyway. We had a big house, lots of room. What I remember the most is waking up on Thanksgiving morning to the great smells coming out of the kitchen. Mom would always start baking her bread early. And the turkey was in the oven by the time us kids got out of bed. Me and my brothers would always aggravate my sister about the pulley bone. You should know about this silverowl. LOL About the bones. LOL But we would take that old pulley bone and pull it apart and tell our sister that she was out of luck...that she was gonna be an old maid!! LOL She didn't know, but the way it was suppose to be was the one holding the short end was the loser. LOL But we never told her that. We always made her believe that WE were the ones who had to decide her fate. LOL I know, we really razzed our sister bad. LOL We still do if we get a chance. LOL

We stayed home, my grandparents lived with us! All my aunts, uncles and cousins gathered at the house. We always had so much fun and food. We kids always had the job of cleaning the kitchen after the dinner. We didn't mind, it was a lot of fun. After dinner and the kitchen was cleaned, us kids would usually go sledding down the hill, usually always a big snow on the ground then. Happy times!
