Having worked in retail for several years(prior to getting my license to practice social work) I am totally surprised that people didn't already know this. I used to tell friends/family if they wanted the "specials" then they'd better be the first ones in the door and make a bee-line straight for the product.
I agree with the article Mellow but people are willing to wait in line hoping THEY'LL be the one(s) who are lucky enough to get that big screen T.V. at a tremendous bargain. I have never been lured in by that Black Friday thing. I did get a decent deal on Presidents' Day on an HDTV at a store that promised to beat the lowest price I'd seen it for.
I read the article about this on the internet and find it to be really sad. Some stores advertising these "bargains" only have in reality 3 to 5 such items to actually sell. If that isn't misleading the public I don't know what is. There should be a law prohibiting stores from doing business this way. There are for sure going to be a lot of pissed off people once they catch wise to this, and it certainly could incite a riot.
people die from this now, all them line up at the doors then stomp each trying to get to where they want in the store. last year a temp wall mart worker was killed when he unlocked the doors.
I never leave the house on Black Friday. Any time I have gone shopping searching for great bargains, I have been disappointed and usually spent money I hadn't meant to spend.
we will be staying at home.
The best deals are in August when they are clearing out merchandise to bring in the Holiday stuff!
I never shop on Black Friday, the stress isn't worth it. I plan to use the day catching up on yard work and stuff around the house. My do-it-yourself landscaping project will be worth much more in terms of added value to my house, than anything I could save shopping.
Our newspaper said that most of the Black Friday merchandise is stuff that is discontinued anyway, and yes, the stock is just a couple per store. They also indicated that Black Friday shopping is for the low-end market. If you really want an item, watch for it on sale at different stores or on-line in the weeks before Christmas. You'll probably find a good price.
One of my sons, from central Ohio, sent me an email saying that he observed - at 10:45am on Thanksgiving Day as he was on his way to the family gathering - several people ALREADY camped outside of the local Best Buy which was not due to open until 5am Friday morning. He noted that the group had grown larger when he was on his way home. It was below freezing with some snow Thanksgiving night. Those must have been SOME bargains!!!!
