The log cabin (A story from school)
The Log Cabin
By Dorothy
A man wished to build a log cabin and had no wood to do so. He asked his neighbor where he got his tools and axes. He was told the hardware store in town. He walked to the hardware store and got an ax. Then he saw on his list of what he needed to build his log cabin, he also needed nails and concrete. That was too heavy to carry so he asked if the hardware store could deliver it to where he was going to build his log cabin. They said they would deliver everything in a few days. That was alright with him.
A few days went by and the concrete and nails hadn't showed up. The man walked to town and asked why his concrete hadn't showed up. He was told he didn't give an address or phone number before he left. If he would leave directions they would deliver it today. The man said he would help load the concrete and other supplies he found he needed if they would give him a ride back to where he had set up a camp tent and staked out the lines for his cabin.
Upon getting there, the driver asked where his saw and piles were. What were piles the man asked.
It's blocks that you set the cabin floor on so it doesn't rot.
I didn't know I needed them... Can you bring some out the next time? The driver said yes and a few days went by and no piles. So the man walked to the hardware store and asked where his piles were. He was told he didn't say how tall they needed to be so they were waiting for him to tell them what to order. By now the man was not happy he had started the project. He ordered the piles and asked what else he needed to build his log cabin.
Logs.
I was going to cut trees down for that, he told the store owner.
You can't.
Why he asked.
Because the wood has to season before it can be drilled to set the corner posts in place. Besides the man would have to get a permit to cut trees down in the place he was going to live. By this time the man was getting upset. He had already spent most of the money he'd saved to build his log cabin.
After talking to the hardware store manager he found out he could order the logs all cut and ready to assemble. Then man went home, packed up his tent and moved into an apartment after he sold everything but the ax back to the hardware store. He kept the ax as a reminder not to rush into anything before checking out what needed to be done.
The End
This was an assignment I had in school. I haven't thought about this in a very long time. Now days we get what we want in a few days. Build homes in a few weeks. Buy cars right off the lot... then we had to wait for some items. If one was lucky the neighbors may have what we needed and we would pay them back when the items we ordered showed up. Times have changed so much.
