New Here

I wanted to join this group so that I can learn more. I have been told that I am all Scottish, but my blood tells a different story. I learned this when I was 20 years old. My blood has what is called an "Anti-Lewis Factor" which according to the Doctors is found in Native americans, which makes me not totally of Scottish desent. My Mother was born in New York in the early thirties and my grandmother claims that her father was of Scottish or Irish desent(sp?) So I am supposedly Scotch but all my life I have had "dreams" which tell me different. I have always had an affinity for all things Native American. All my life things that were happening to the Native Americans would make me cry. I once had a serious sense of deja vue while driving through Oklahoma on the Indian Parkway. I had traveled on the parkway for about half an hour when I saw a large building on my left and had a sense of being home and if I would go past that particular barn I would find what I was searching for. As there was no actual road there I never took the turn but not doing that has haunted me since 1994. One day I hope to make that journey to find
what ever it is. Has anyone had something like that happen to them? I also had another incident when I was in South Dakota, like I had been there in another time and place and could remember the smell of the land almost as if it was calling me to run free there. Most people think I am crazy when I talk about those things, but I know I am not. Hope I am not anyway.

I "knew" I was "Indian" when I was 6 years old and starting school. My parents said "no." I assume I thought that because of where I was born (Winslow, Arizona). A few years ago one of my cousins, who was also working on our family's genealogy, emailed me that our Great-Grandmother was Cherokee and .....English, we believe. Can't find the exact name on the Dawes Rolls, but similar names. Sometimes you just know....there's a spiritual connection, I think.

In the time you are refering to 1930es it was not cool to be an NDN, my own Father was happy to pass as a southern German with a little Italian in him,People did not develope pride till the 1970, (era of Wounded Knee)in being NDN.

Yep,the 50s were the same. We were sometimes teased about being Mexicans. When I was small that didn't bother me because I had White,Mexican American and NDN childhood friends. A small town means you play with each other or no-one. Later in life I learned about the reality of racism.
It can go in reverse also.

My mother spent her entire life telling everyone she was Italian. But her looks tell me different and so does my blood work. But I know that she was not italian at all. I have often had dreams of other places and other people. I often have sense of deja vue when it came to certain things. I have beliefs that were not taught to me but seems to be an intergal (sp?) part of me. I am glad to hear from everyone. Thanks

That's the Elders long passed speaking to you. Listen to them and be pure of heart. (sounds corny, but it can take you to a place of peace and understanding)

Please feel welcome to join this group. Whether you are or are not Native American you are welcomed when you "come in a good way". I am Northern Cheyenne and my father and grandfather moved to New Mexico in 1876. I have Northern Cheyenne, Apache, Anglo, and Spanish in my family (18 brothers and 6 sisters). I was sent to public ans Catholic schools. I am one of the many Native American children who had their beautiful "long hair cut off" and forced to speak English only! We would talk to each other in Cheyenne or Spanish 'what did she say?' and the Nuns would slap your hands with a big ruler and say, "Speak English only!" I agree with the others. Trust your 'gut' even if someone else has told you something else. I agree with Dodger44, the Elders are speaking to your heart and listen to your heart. Welcome my friend. GunnerySargeant.

Thank you for the encouragment and the welcome here. I believe that the Elders are speaking and I am not always sure how to listen but I do try. I also have an affinity to animals. Especially dogs and cats. I am not sure why, but they follow me all the time. When I lived in Kansas, my girls knew how to find me in my trailer park by looking to see which house all the cats were sitting in front of. I am the only person I know that no matter where I live animals find me and I am not sure why. Even here in the NW my yard has possums and racoons that are always in the yard. Even though my dog chases them off. Sometimes I wonder why they follow me or find me. I do not mind, but they talk to me, in their own ways.
