That's really cool (the ditto one)!!!!
I've never lived next door to the Griswolds, but one of my old neighbors had a lot of yard stuff, like deer made out of twigs -- the neighbor kids kept putting them in compromising positions, if you know what I mean! That was funny!
I had a neighbor that went to the MAX with decorating with lights. His house was entirely LIGHTS.....not just outlining windows and roofs. It was solid lights. Some thought he was a little essentric. He even had to get Public Service out there to update his electric lines to a heavier duty workload. This lasted about 3 years but the prep work and the removal was too much every year, so he scaled down abit.
There are a few places like that near my city. You have to drive a bit to get to them though. One guy decorates his tractor and the wheels have lights that blink or flash so they actually look like they are turning. He also decorates all his pine trees to look like angels (with lights) They are a perfect cone shape with a head. On the side of his house or garage are big letters that say "PEACE ON EARTH" and sometimes he changes that. Other places look like they must really spend a mint in eletricity. I wonder who will still decorate like that this year? Even if they can afford it, it portrays and awful waste to some of us. (scrooges) I would take that extra money and donate it to a food pantry or to house the homeless myself!
Razz -- easier said than done - do you decorate at all? If so, don't decorate and donate the money...
I'm going to put up lights this year, just some across the front of the house.
I went out to the garage, found my box of lights and stuff, and decided it was too hot out to get out the ladder and staple them to the house! I might ask my son to help me on Thanksgiving while the turkey is on the grill...
...good idea getting help....recalling last week's conversation re: ladders/roof tops! ;)

When we lived in the UP there was always a cement mixer decorated with chaser lights. It gave the effect of the mixer part turning. Rather interesting.
A neighbor here has lots of lights but it seems like every light up known to man from the nativity scene to a runway outlined on his roof with Santa, alo including lit candy canes, deer, and a few other odds and ends.
Yes - there is a family that does that here, trish - no real theme - just everything they can light up (even the cat if they can catch him!)ha ha
I can't afford to light up anything this year. When I can, I just put up one string on the front porch. I like inside lights though, so I can turn off all the lamps and watch tv by the tree lights. It's such a homey, happy feeling. This year will have to forgo that especially if son moves out before Christmas. oh well.
trish - 'chaser lights' is what they are called? I am glad I know that now. I can suggest those to my neighbor guy who is looking for a unique pattern for his lights this year.
there was a house that had the lights set to music. was on you tube. i bookmarked it but the link does not work any more. it was great.
this is another thing i miss about driving. get to travel the country and see all the lights people put up.
down in texas, there is a tree farmer that goes all out. lights up his whole farm. need a car to drive
thru it. there was a truck stop a few miles from it and the locals used to charge a slight fee to take the
drivers .
