Time for a little Celebration!

I’m the poster who occasionally asks questions about San Diego. Here’s the current status of our “Retire Where” plan: We live in the soon-to-be-frozen upper Midwest. And our house will soon be paid off. We just this past week closed on a condo in the downtown area of San Diego (East Village neighborhood). Home shopping long distance via Internet, but with a local SD realtor, is not exactly ideal, but our daughter lives, works, and rents in the area too. And we’ve made a few in-person trips.

It’s a complicated market in SD right now. The banks are sitting on an inventory of foreclosed properties and dribbling them into the market to keep an artificially high demand—a good strategy, I suppose, from their point of view, but I wonder how long they can afford to do that. Anyway, we think/hope we’re buying near the bottom of the market cycle. Our daughter will live in the condo (rent from us and rent the other bedroom) for perhaps three years before we retire (yay!), sell our house here, and make the big move. Can you tell we’re a bit excited? Thanks for all the Retire Where threads, discussions, and tips. This is a great group!

An excellent plan. I think you made a good choice, especially since you are moving from freezing temps to some of the best climate in the country. And, you are buying at a good time and having your daughter move in: what a great idea. Congratulations and good luck. We rented our house here in Brevard to strangers for two years. When we finally retired and moved across the country, we found the house in very very bad shape. It took plenty of $$$ to clean up the tenant's messes. I'll never never be a landlord again, especially for people who don't know about caring for their animals. The two dogs destroyed the carpets, hardwood floors, all the doors, and what was left of the yard. And, the property manager returned their pet deposit without ever checking the property.

Great move on your part KP, I wish I could figure out just where I want to start planning and looking. I have been looking, but I just can't get all my wants satisfied as to area!
I wouldn't mind KY or TN or maybe TX, but....but....
Maybe I am just not that ready!

San Diego was my target when I moved from Utah to New England 32 years ago. I liked the weather, the people whom I had met there, the ocean and all the amenities found there. I do hope that you enjoy the area when you relocate.

Except for moving to the East Coast when I was eight for 8 yrs, I was born and lived in San Diego, until 1983 when I moved to WA State. It is a wonderful place to live and understand with the housing market might be a great time to buy but housing is expensive. Where isn't it in CA right? The weather though is perfect if you like the sun shining all the time. I myself love the four seasons. Also I would never want to live in CA now because of the state of their economy. Also you must like the military because San Diego is a Navy town. It's all good though. My parents are buried at Fort Rosecrans in Point Loma - a beautiful place.

Congratulations on your new condo. Sounds like a great plan and hopefully the housing market will be back up significantly by the time you are ready to sell. I remember anticipating my retirement, although it didn't include a move. But it IS very exciting. I made plans, counted the days. Didn't have a computer back then which would have made all that figuring so much easier since all the tools you need to plan and prepare are right on line. I wound up coming out two years earlier than I planned for one month before my 50th birthday.

So I know the feeling, excitement is in order. I hope you and your wife will be blessed to see your plan come to fruition.
