Born in Mexico City, where she worked and died, Frida Kahlo lived and painted in the first half of the 20th century. After surviving a terrible accident that should have killed her, she spent months in bed in a body cast, which is when she began painting her trademark surrealistic work. Of the approximately 150 paintings, most are of herself. She married the famous muralist, Diego Rivera, and their marriage was always tempestuous.



As can be imagined, she is very much revered here in Mexico.

Her work is intriguing and she's revered in many art circles. I'm really attracted to surrealism in art, too. I bought an art magazine a few years ago called Juxtapoz, and some of the current "edgy" artwork in there is reminiscent of the second painting you posted.

Like most things I like the classics. The 2nd picture you posted makes me feel ill. I dont like surrealism in any case but some of it is very disturbing to me, I could not live with that in my house. I do not like "modern" or "abstract" either makes me on edge somehow. Its jarring on my nerves. I like order and realism and admire artists that can paint or sculpt true to life pictures. I like to see the beauty of the world just as it is not all mixed up and done up differently. I know its all a question of taste. I can deal with abstract in a remote uninvolved way, for example I would use a piece if it fit in with my colour scheme where if I found a piece that I loved I would decorate around it as a focus point. All the art work I have bought have been things I love and even though unknown artists I enjoy their technique or skills. Then again I also do my own watercolours.
