Still Have Peppers!

Hi Everyone! When I heard that frost was approaching, I moved my peppers which I had planted in pots into the garage. And, believe it or not, I am still getting peppers off of them! I picked over two dozen off of one plant the other day. And, I am getting not only green ones, but yellow and red ones! I open the door and windows on nice days to give them as much air and sun as I can. I also have been leaving the lights on out there for a few house each day. I guess the like the environment in there. You may wish to put some of your peppers and tomatos in pots next year to increase your harvest. Get large pots, as these plants are "miniature trees"!

our garage freezes, and is pretty dark. a few years ago i did this in the laundry room, which has flourescent lighting. the lights are on most of the day, since i am in and out of there, and the mators did very well.

How wonderful and I truly like peppers. When you put in your flourescent lights did you have to buy a certain kind that the plants could grow? OneLittle Lady thank you for sharing your ideas.

Well, I can't use my garage because it's too full, what with all my daughter's stuff out there. But it's a good idea. Anything to keep the home grown food supply going. I've done a lot of that sort of thing in the past, will probably do it again. I have a 3 foot planter which I need to rev up for indoor veggies, I guess. There's a spot waiting for it in front of my patio door.

My garden is still going well outdoors with some assistance. I'm about to post some pictures on the Gardening in Warm Climates sticky, in case you want to check out what I'm doing.

I grew a variety of tomato called "long keepers." As the name states I picked them about 5 weeks ago and they sit on my counter. They just keep a long time. I still have about 8 left. They are not the best tasting but they sure beat the stores and I love eating a fresh tomato from my garden at Thanksgiving!!!

I have a few big, deep pots & I'm considering putting lettuce, carrots & radishes in for the winter inside here somewhere. I've been toying with the idea of a tomato in a deep pot, too. Nothing like fresh tomatoes off the vine. I have a strawberry pot that I'm thinking of stocking with basil, chives, tarragon & a couple of other herbs. I could keep those in the kitchen window under the purple passion plant for the winter.

I have a few annual flower seeds left, too. Maybe I'll toss some in there for color.

This is all a big maybe at this point. But it's a good maybe.

Annie, I have no special florescent lights. Just 2, 100 watt, energy-saving ones. You know the bulb that looks like a curled up florescent! But, I do have a large window in there, and when it is nice outside I open the door and put up the screen and open the windows for air circulation. But, the peppers must like them, as some did turn red! I have now picked all of them because my "hubby" wants his garage back for the winter so he can pull in the car. What I didn't freeze the first night, I left on the kitchen table, and in there I have a ceiling fan with 4 "natural sunlight" bulbs, and they are all turning red. So, you really do not need special lights that cost you a ton in electricity.

Happy winter growing to those of you who are going to try planting herbs, flowers and plants indoors.
