So What Have You Watched Lately?

I saw this Wes Craven-produced flick about a week ago. Directed by Robert Harmon, it follows four young adults who all had night terrors as children. One of their number, Billy, commits suicide; like Billy, the remaining three discover they now bear a mark left on them by something that attacked them in the dark. The main character, psychology student Julia Lund (Laura Regan), gets plenty of support from her hunky boyfriend (Marc Blucas, familiar as Riley from Buffy The Vampire Slayer), though he believes her fears are just symptoms of stress.

We never really see the creatures that are after Julia and her friends. We get vague glimpses of them in the dark, and hear the unsettling sounds they make. We also don't get a clear view of the violence they do. For me, this actually made the film scarier -- it stimulated my imagination.

I enjoyed the film -- it made me jump several times -- though there was a period about halfway through where it really dragged for awhile, then picked up again. But it had a lot of clever misdirection followed by surprises that made it effective, and a very creepy ending. It was well worth seeing.

So what have you watched lately?

Chiller had an American Gothic marathon yesterday which, of course, I taped on my DVR. I still don't know why that show wasn't more popular. It was always one of my favorites. Lucas Buck was evil incarnate, but still...

I think the Sci-Fi channel has something that look clever and scary on Sunday night, but then when you talk about living fire it could be an interesting story if done right (like the Sci-Fi channel can do movies right).

Last night I saw the last half of the low-budget William Shatner flick "Kingdom Of The Spiders." I found it on IFC while channel surfing. Wish I'd known it was on -- I've always wanted to see it. It was every bit as unintentionally funny as I'd heard. There was one moment when this little girl was standing on a table with spiders crawling on it all around her, and screaming. Shatner (who's the town sheriff) runs into the room, holds out his arms, and yells "Jump!" The kid jumps into his arms -- and he immediately drops her on the floor, which is also crawling with spiders, and runs off to take care of something else! I howled with laughter.

When I was not able to sleep early this morning I actually found Soilent Green with a young Charlie (not to be confused with Sheen) Heston in the movie. He was still shouting one of my favorite lines about Soilent Green being people.

Especially when it looks like he is trying very hard not to laugh was saying the line.

During last night's insomnia I saw "Prey," a very plausible movie about a mother and her two step children trapped in a car by two lions, and the remake of "The Day The Earth Stood Still," which I expected to hate. To my surprise, the remake was very good -- rather than imitate the original, they took the basic premise and made it into a totally different story. Keanu Reeves made an interesting Klatu. I also liked the lion movie -- gripping, and the cast was excellent. Peter ("Robocop") Weller played the woman's husband.

This has nothing to do with what I've watched lately, I'm just curious about something. Every once in awhile, I'll see "Comment deleted by an Administrator" in these blogs. For what reason does an administrator delete a comment?

It's almost always a comment of mine in which I made a typo, and being the most anal retentive person on the planet, I put up a corrected version and delete the original. (Blush). The only other time I delete a comment is if it posts twice, which sometimes happens.

I know "The Giant Behemoth." We dated briefly in the 70s. That explains my concave face. It is one of those titles, that makes you want to say "duh," isn't it -- like The Bloody Vampire.

Saw an interesting horror flick with Malcolm McDowell last night called "Island Of The Dead" -- set on Hart Island, where the unclaimed dead of New York are buried in mass graves. McDowell is a developer who wants to use the island as a "city" for homeless people who'll be paid subjects of nasty medical research. One problem: seems the island has evolved its own brand of flies and maggots that have gotten used to eating human flesh. After the "groundbreaking," Malcolm and some cops and a small convict work crew get marooned there overnight. The movie seemed a lot more plausible than it sounds -- very creepy.
