Those Fabulous Renaissance Clothes

I am trying not to be shallow here, but you have to admit, the clothes they wore back then are just magnificent. Somehow, jeans and a tee just don't compare at all.

How far we have fallen from the elegance of yore. Sigh.

Yes indeed there were. I dont care what anyone says, there is just something about a man in tights. or a skirt for that matter (I hear you Dirck) it is just way cool. We are just so boring now.

If I remember correctly, I don't think I would have cared for the undergarments. Very constricting. And many layers. I don't think I would like all those layers, not in Italy, not in the summer. Now, the guys in tights, that part is all good.

Well I suppose if you put it that way, for the women......when has anything been easy. Yes, I bet in Italy in summer it was rather smelly. I think that I would probably not wear undies if that were the case and keep things to a minimum as best I could. Still, suppose if you dont know any better. Bet the men were a bit odorous too (gag) to say nothing of lice and such things.

geesh, with my skinny legs , i do not think i would look good in tights. especially now. lost almost all
muscle on my left leg. would look like a peg leg dresssed like that.

I wonder why those tight legging things were the fashion? But you gals are right, men in tights ......

Wasn't that the name of the Mel Brooks film, 'Robin Hood: Men in Tights'? I must go google.

AHA! Yes, directed by Mel Brooks.

Well maybe it was just warm. They were wool and probably baggy at the knees so they had the tunic to cover the knees and stop the drafts.

i HAVE A FRIEND WHO teaches Woman in History at a local college. She used her research to write her Thesis for her Doctorate also. Her theory is that as women got more independent, they wore less and less clothes, i.e., corsets, hats, gloves, etc. So, Ladies, do you really think these gorgeous clothes are worth your freedom.

Just how free do you think a woman is who feels she must display most of her body sans garments in order to feel attractive?

But it would seem intuitively that your friend is right -- more independence, less clothing.

I read somewhere that a man's tie is a symbolic representation of a weapon, (and not his ... ahem .... as is often suggested.)

I like to wear a stonemasons smock round the house, it's cozy, sturdy, easy to pop on or off, has big pockets and is very similar to such older fashions. Mine is dark green with brass buttons. the cut is like a lab coat but looser and bigger.

A little research reveals that those were not tights. They were individual leggings that left the anterior and posterior exposed. There was a light weight linen undergarment, which did not do much to conceal the gentleman's attributes, since apparently it was constructed with a strategically placed slit.

As fashion dictated ever shorter tunics, ladies were exposed to more knowledge of male anatomy than was deemed appropriate. Thus was born the codpiece!

Why is it that men got to be completely comfortable, and women had to be bound up in whalebone and smothered in layers of suffocating fabric?
