Never mind on disabling AVG 9. You have to disable the Resident Shield. I think on older versions, you just right-clicked the icon and there was something that said something complicated like, "Disable."
That still doesn't get SP2 installed. AVG apparently isn't the culprit. I've tried about everything on the Windows help pages and nothing seems to work. I actually was able to download the update, but it just plain refuses to install.

I also had trouble with AVG 9 I used CCleaner to unstall it.It did with no problems.

I tried to download AVG 9.0, but because I also have Avist it wouldn't work. Does that make sense? What can I do?
The problem apparently isn't with AVG 9. I was able to disable it by killing the Resident Shield. I finally resorted to going to their help page online, and the answer was there. But, even with AVG 9 disabled, I still can't install Vista SP2 for 64-bit.
Sometimes a Firewall can prevent downloads . Is it trying to download from windows update . I had no problems when i install Vista 64-bit and downloaded all updates !
This is perfect timing! I need to disable AVG 9 in order to smooth out the upgrade process to Seven, and I couldn't find it, either.
Knowing to disable "Resident Shield" is good thing!

I think you have to turn off and / or update Windows Defender. Try updating it first then turn it off.
It sometimes helps to go through the Windows Genuine Advantage routine to help before doing updates.
I had the same problem of not being able to install the service pack 2. If you go to Microsoft's site you can download a "stand alone installer". In order to turn off AVG you can go to Start, in the little window type MSConfig. It will bring up a box and select "services". This will list all of the services that start up when you turn on your computer. You can highlight AVG and then "disable" it.
After doing that you can try to install the Service Pack 2 by using the stand alone installer. If this doesn't work you probably have a Trojan virus that will need to be removed before attempting the installation for a second time. In that case, if you've never used AVAST Anti-Virus software, you can download it and ask it to run in the Boot sector. It will find the virus and you can remove it and try the installation again.
I hope this info is helpful and understandable, if not feel free to email me.
