Versatility

After looking at all the camping alternatives for bikes the last few days, I decided to add a bit of versatility to my own road bike.

The rack only adds about 170 grams extra weight to the bike, and the bag adds about 265 grams....empty of course. I'm sure by the time I add enough "stuff" to take me on an overnighter it'll add about 150 pounds. All kidding aside, I noticed more bikes with racks and bags like this at the "tour de Trees" ride than ever, and it seems to be a growing trend. Into these things disappeared all the extra cold weather clothing, food, extra gloves, rain gear, tools, spare tubes, spare parts, pumps, etc. I have a smaller bag as well, but it weighs empty a little more than this larger one does. It also has the added advantage of making a solid platform for my rear light. I got this with the idea that I would probably take the rack off and put it on when I needed it, but after lifting the bike with it on and riding it a short distance, I may change my mind and leave the rack on permanently. I can also attach the frame mounted pump to it and get it out of the way.

Beautiful bike Rikitiki3 and nice set up. I think all this talk about traveling by bike has got me already wishing winter was over and going somewhere, anywhere.

A bike trunk is a very handy addition on tours. Useful for holding lunches, rain gear, street clothes, cameras, tools.....you name it.

Wait....Winter isn't over yet?!?!?
teesiea, I can't even describe the bug that I have about getting on my bike and going somewhere, anywhere.

Riki, I have looked at bike trunks, they are so versatile. For me , I like to have stuff with me to be prepared for all the conditions which means some sort of pack. I refuse ever again to wear a pack on my back, so, one has to go on the bike. I use a handlebar bag most of the time, more stuff then I toss on one of my panniers. But I have to say, that is a nice look there you have with your bike, rack, and trunk!

Alas....winter isn't even here yet, and it's got me dreaming of long rides as well. This one started because I put a rack like this on my mountain bike to hold extra cold weather clothes. I liked it so well, and when I started noticing more and more of them and how practical they were, I got one for the road bike as well. Maybe winter is over where you are Jim Bangs..... but I'll bet not!
