Pumpkin Shortage

Heavy rains have pretty much destroyed this year's small harvest, says food giant Nestle, which controls about 85% of the crop for canning. Supermarkets say supplies are tight.

Some chains have been pushing fresh pumpkins as alternatives. At various points during the shortage, Sprouts Farmers Market has featured displays of a smaller, plumper California-grown pumpkin species than what is sold for Halloween jack-o'-lanterns. A sticker with each pumpkin provides a recipe for turning it into pie.

I love fresh pumpkin. The variety I buy most often is called Sugar Pie. It's a small pumpkin with a really nice shape. I almost hate to cut them up they are so cute. I have also been buying kabocha which is a Japanese variety of pumpkin which is green on the outside. I've heard that the skin is edible, but I haven't been brave enough to try that yet. I've had excellent results cooking with both. I especially like them in curry.

I love fresh pumpkins but have never made any with curry. Do you any recipes I could try?

I'm not much of a recipe person, I'm afraid. I microwave my pumpkin, add a couple of other vegetables, and a store-bought curry sauce. I especially like to use Trader Joe's yellow curry sauce with pumpkin. I bought some frozen green garbanzos there & didn't know what to do with them, so added them to a curry I made with kabocha pumpkin, onion, and the yellow curry sauce. It was so good. The green garbanzos were kind of like peas. I love to try new things.

You must be a good cook. You and bc brave it with no recipes. I usually have a recipe but a few times I have freely put things together and they turned great. I love gree garbanzos and use them often.
