As a side note to history, the only Confederate state capital east of the Mississippi not captured during the Civil War was the Florida capital in Tallahassee. In March of 1865, a group of old men and students from what would later become Florida State University turned back an attempt by Union forces in the Battle of Natural Bridge. The battle site is now a State Park and is open for inspection.
