896 sq ft and green

This one-story, 2 bedroom, 1 bath home has double 2x4 exterior walls, covered porch with photovoltaic cells on the roof , motion and timer switches, led lights.

It is possible to go green with out losing the homey felling of a house.

If money was no option, would you add green features to your home or even build a new one?

Which green feature would you use?

I would love to build an energy efficient, green home. In addition, I'd like easy maintenance, and a universal design that we could retire in.

Green features: Low VOC paints, carpets, materials. Energy efficient appliances. Solar shingles. Water saving showers and commodes. Drip watering for foundation, xeriscape landscaping.

Money is an option, however. 896 sq. ft is a little too small. I'd like 1400 sq. ft. with 3rd bedroom available as an office and a second, full bath.

I would like to live in a green home. What I would add to it is the usual stuff. I am more interested, right now, in what to do with the stuff I replace. Rather than tearing things out and filling a dumpster, it would be nice to send cabinets, fixtures, flooring, and other things so someone who could--and would--use them.

Habitat for Humanity's ReStores are good places to give your cabinets, good used carpet and fixtures.

Almost all affiliates have a restore location. Many of them will even pick up the items.

All money goes back into the program and somebody gets to create a better environment for themselves with those things.

I would build a new one if money was no object, however that is not the case. I would build it where I would never have to depend on electricity again(that is buy it) I've wanted to do this for a long time, and I think this will be the curve of the future for many.
