Palin angered by 'sexist' Newsweek cover

Tue Nov 17, 2:41 pm ET

For the second time since Sarah Palin stepped into the national political spotlight, a photo of the former Republican vice-presidential candidate featured on the cover of Newsweek magazine is sparking controversy. Palin herself blasted the "out-of-context" cover as "sexist" on her Facebook page.

Originally published in the August 2009 issue of Runners World, the photo features the former Alaska governor in short runner's shorts. It was part of a multi-photograph slideshow that accompanied an article about Palin and her love for the sport titled, "I'm A Runner." In her Facebook post late last night, Palin took issue with Newsweek using a photo from an article about health and fitness to promote an analysis piece contemplating her relevance as a political figure:

"The choice of photo for the cover of this week's Newsweek is unfortunate. When it comes to Sarah Palin, this "news" magazine has relished focusing on the irrelevant rather than the relevant. The Runner's World magazine one-page profile for which this photo was taken was all about health and fitness -- a subject to which I am devoted and which is critically important to this nation. The out-of-context Newsweek approach is sexist and oh-so-expected by now. If anyone can learn anything from it: it shows why you shouldn't judge a book by its cover, gender, or color of skin. The media will do anything to draw attention -- even if out of context.

I don't blame her. Even the gals from "The View", except for Joy Behar, were outraged that Newsweek would use a photo from a health and fitness magazine for their cover. I suppose Runner's World sold the rights to Newsweek, and Sarah had signed waivers for them to use it, but I doubt she ever thought it would end up on the cover of Newsweek.

It's all about making her appear as an 'airhead' with no substance. Make her look sexy and she's just another dumb celebrity. Some of us think differently. Propaganda. Discernment and actually listening to the person is what is vital.

I agree with both of you. You'd think in this day and age people would be over the discrimination of women and openly sexist covers like this one. I hope Newsweek gets an incredible amount of objection to this cover. How insensitive can they be toward women?????

As insensitive as they want to be, especially if that "insensitivity" is directed towards a conservative woman. As most of the MSM is aware, we all wear hats, white gloves, attend afternoon bridge club, and are active in the local garden club.
Can you imagine the uproar if it had been Mrs. Obama, or SOS Clinton, on the cover. Even the tag line, is demeaning with it's "Sound of Music" reference.
Disgusting.

Let's see, she poses for the picture for another magazine, then gets upset when it's published yet again in another magazine. If she didn't want this picture to be published she shouldn't have posed for it. Frankly, considering some of the hideous pictures that have been published of other political women - bad photos of Hillary Clinton, Laura Bush, Melody Bachman, etc. - all taken at inopportune moments, I'd say she got off lucky. Women usually get the ugly pictures posted when someone wants to attack..

I bet she'd rather have had an ugly picture published on the cover of Newsweek. I know I would given the alternative. This is just demeaning and I can't imagine anyone coming up with a good enough excuse for Newsweek to use it for it's cover or anyone condoning it. Especially a female. It's a reflection on each one of us that they get away with crap like this in the 21st Century. Just disgusting. I'd be mad as H*ll and would have a nice defamation of character suit thrown at them besides the probable copyright issues.

mshadow I bet if Newsweek published a cover with a picture of Obama bowing with his nose in the crotch of the Emperor of Japan - there would be a loud cry of foul. The picture that they put on the cover is chosen for a reason - the reason that this one was chosen was to demean Palin, not to show she kept herself in good shape to stay healthy. If you believe anything else, you are in denial.

And how on earth would a picture of anyone with their nose in another's crotch compare with this picture? I'd consider that obscene for anyone. I thought she was fairly well dressed, if casual. The shorts aren't short shorts, she's got a long sleeved sweater with no cleavage and is posed nicely. I don't think the picture makes her look like an airhead. It's an attractive picture. I think she's making a fuss over nothing. I'd much rather have a picture like this published than some of the ugly pics I've seen of the female politicians I mentioned above.

If there's anything demeaning about this pic, it's the flag draped over the chair. BTW, Palin approved of this picture for another magazine. If she found the pic that offensive she should have insisted it and any copies be destroyed.

Yes, she approved it for Runner's World Mag....an athletic magazine. Do you see a difference between Runner's World and the COVER of Newsweek????? Give it a break! I very much doubt that she approved it for a supposedly serious news magazine with a pandering headline.

And yes, she looks great, but it's not an appropriate pose or picture for a newsmagazine featuring her as a serious politician. They are making fun of her. They are not taking her seriously as a politician or as a woman. It's inappropriate and sexist and an insult. It's just another disgraceful display of discrimination against women.
