Gay couples blast federal Defense of Marriage Act

BOSTON – Gay married couples suing the government over a federal law that doesn't recognize same-sex unions say there is "no legitimate or plausible" reason for having a federal definition of marriage that excludes gay couples.
The lawsuit was brought by seven gay couples and three widowers, all of whom were married in Massachusetts after it became the first state in the country to legalize gay marriage in 2004.
In court documents filed Tuesday, the couples say the federal Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) violates the equal protection clause of the U.S. Constitution because it denies them access to federal benefits given to other married couples, including pensions, health insurance and the ability to file joint tax returns. They argue that the law "eviscerates" the historic power of the states to establish criteria for marriage.

Ron every day I turn on tv to hear about another poor soul killed because of homophobia even as politicians proclaim they do not hate, then accuse us of every lie they can imagine. I'm pretty damned tired of it all.

Jessica, from your post on FB "Over the weekend the brutalized body of gay teen George Steven Lopez Mercado was found by the side of a road in Puerto Rico. The police investigator suggested that he deserved what he got because of the "type of lifestyle" he was leading."

view link I really don't understand ... why was this young man such a threat? why was he decapitated, mutilated, and burned? Where does that hatred come from? If you're heterosexual why would you care if someone is homosexual? and vice versa ....

I'll just post what I posted over on Facebook:

Some are just so afraid of their own potential of being gay, some are just sick. Every day though they hear justification to do what they do. Politicians decry us as destroying marriage, tearing the fabric of democracy, equating us with pedophiles and whatever else they can dig up. That is all the justification these sick souls need.

As long as I can remember, the stories are told. A steady dribble of promising lives lost forever. We all heard of Matthew Shephard. But that same week a young lesbian was stabbed to death in Houston. For every story like this that makes the news, many others get little coverage. I'll stop. It just makes me both angry and sad.

I, for one, don't approve of same sex marriages but do favor things like civil unions or contracts that would give same sex couples similar rights as those of married couples.

Equality for all -- the fear mongers spread their crap like a virus! Haven't we had enough fear? Whatever we call it there should be no inequality of rights allowed anywhere within the government!

I have yet to hear anyone give a logical, reasoned argument against gay marriage. All I hear is the lie that my relationship with my partner threatens traditional marriage--but no one ever says how. Disapproval of gay marriage shows ignorance at best and hatred at the worst. I, for one, am sick and tired of listening to all the know-nothings out there who would like nothing better than for us to go back into the closet and shut up.

And Eagle02, civil unions or contracts are just second class citizenship. I am a US citizen, I pay my taxes, I vote, and I expect my government to support and affirm me in the same way it supports my heterosexual fellow countrymen. I don't want special rights or privileges, I just want equal rights.

OK I'm getting very angry now, so I'll shut up.
