Sutton Hoo.......

Sutton Hoo near Woodbridge, Suffolk, England, is the site of two Anglo-Saxon cemeteries of the 5th century and early 6th century, one of which contained an undisturbed ship burial including a wealth of artifacts of outstanding art-historical and archaeological significance.

Sutton Hoo is of a primary importance to early medieval historians because it sheds light on a period of English history which is on the margin between myth, legend and historical documentation. Use of the site culminated at a time when the ruler (Raedwald) of East Anglia held senior power among the English people, and played a dynamic (if ambiguous) part in the establishment of Christian rulership in England. It is central to understanding of the Anglo-Saxon Kingdom of East Anglia and of the period in a wider perspective.

The ship-burial, probably dating from the early 7th to 9th century and excavated in 1939, is one of the most magnificent archaeological finds in England for its size and completeness, far-reaching connections, quality and beauty of its contents, and for the profound interest of the burial ritual itself.

While this is nothing new, I found it again while doing a post in my British group. I love the fact that people still find things in the soil of Britain and sometimes magnificent things. So thought I would just throw this out there again for anyone who enjoys such things.

That is a great story Espirit . I think that if you lived on that farm , you would have to feel the spirits of the old Saxons .

Well I know I sure felt haunted for many years after Dad took me to see the skeletons they dug up in the fields at the back of our house. Had nightmares for years.I was very impressed. Looked under my bed every night.

I lived near Woodbridge in the middle 70s, when I wasn't too interested, I went to a lot of castles and manor houses, but did not remember hearing of this till years after I moved away. A former neighbor sent me lots of clippings when the new visitor center was opened. Sorry I missed it!
Metal detectors are not frowned on in England and many more finds are being uncovered, with the finders keeping a% of the goods/gold. There are sites where they share pictures of their finds.
Read a bit in Reader's Digest once, an American tourist asked an English farmer why the battle fields were not marked & sacred grounds - the farmer replied that if they did, there would be no place left to live and farm!
The farmhouse I rented was over 400 yo and the nr by village was in William the Conqueror's Domesday Book

That is so true Adalinda. When we were still living there we went to Bosworth Field. I wanted to see where Richard 111 died. Well, the battlefield is just a farmers field and we parked at the side of the road, actually slept in the car that night, it was most uncomfortable. The entire country was a battle of one kind or other. If I ever go back I am going to get a metal detector. My luck I would find a WW2 unexploded bomb. Yes that still happens.

A man in the village was clearing an old shed that had collapsed when he found what he thought was a thermos type bottle, but he had the 6th sense to call the police, who called the UneXploded Ord folks!
My neighbor fist went to that area with the Land Army and told me allsorts of really neat stories.
