Sorta pick up some on my own, as I progressed, I was taught more from a different people from when I worked.
Everything I know about computers, I learned at work.
When I worked , I had alot of classes in operations of accounting on the computer, checking people in & out at the motel on the computer, but, everything else I have learned on my own. made alot of mistakes along the way but have learned enough to keep me going.
Almost all I know was learned at work; since I have been home now for over a year, my skills have not increased. For quite some time, I had a support person assigned to me; when I went to work full-time for a university, I had a work-study student. She was very tech savy, however, she was only with me for a couple of months-so she did not get a chance to teach me a lot of the things I really need to know. Sure wish I knew more!
VBG - when we got our first computers at work - we got no training - just were told - here's the computer's - now use them! We learned by trial and error - and the help of the computer help desk people! Finally - after we had muddled through and were becoming reasonably competent - we got training classes - and yes - I'm retired from the Federal Government.
I traded some labor for an old PC clone. 5.44mHz processor, 30mB hard disc and 16 color monitor. Awesome! I got interested in Lotus 1-2-3 and bought a book on how to use it. Went to work for a soil testing lab that used 1-2-3 and wrote a bunch of spreadsheets to convert raw data into graphs. Later I got a computer that could get 'on-line' - so pretty much self-taught - although I did have occasional help from a Romanian computer guru...
