NASA and the space program

Why do you think American people have become so blase about the space program? A shuttle launched today, headed for the international space station. I think the video of the launch should be shown in every classroom, followed by a discussion of the work being done at the International Space Station. History is in the making, but it seems that not too many people care any more.

Kathychris: You're right. I just seems to me that too many people don't care about anything newsworthy or important anymore. Not when there is MTV, E-Channel, Sex in the City, Jon&Kate or any of of those absolutely air-headed television programs.

Me thinks people get bored after the first telling of something. Thank God we have the choice to review things when we want to.

I feel that the space program is a waste of money. Living in space is not practicable for humans and we are far from the stage where lengthy manned exploration is an option. We have a lot of problems down in on terra firma that need solving and I think that should take precedence. I'm sure there have been gains from work done at the space station, but really, are they worth all the billions we've spent since the '60s?

Perhaps what is learned in space has long term benefits we're unaware of. I would like to think so. On another money black hole idea, what about the largest machine in the world, the particle accelerator in Switzlerland/France? That superconducting super collider over 16 miles long and 5 in diameter, what on earth do they hope to learn from smashing two subatomic particles together at near the speed of light? I don't know.

I googled it and still am unable to understand what they expect to discover. Anti matter? Dark matter? Parallel universes? Then... what is expected to be done with the knowledge? Unlimited supply of energy? I don't know.

I can understand sending unmanned missions into our solar system, but manned missions are far too expensive. Our transportation infrastructure is falling apart and they are talking about sending a manned mission to Mars?....we need to clean up our own back yard first. This is a matter of priorities.

well, i think we need the space exploration. fore too long , this planet will be played out, we need some where else to go . hopefully not to make the same mistakes we made here

that craft they crashed into the moon proved there is water. which means, people could live there.

Our government had been operating in a deficit mode since the Clinton administration. Some of pending issues are the war, HCR, fraud/waste in government programs, absolutely stupid pork belly projects by legislators, corruption, ad infinitum. Some of these wealthy elected officials are from another planet judging from their lack of understanding of the needs of the average man/woman who aren't in their league.

When the space mission Challenger exploded 73 seconds after takeoff and with it Christa McAuliffe, among others in 1986, it was horrifying. There are so many unknowns about space, and to sacrifice human lives for space exploration IMO is unnecessary and expensive. I agree doo, there are priorities that we must tackle right here on earth. Do any of us really desire to live out there somewhere in space? So what is the objective of the space program?

I agree jilly....way too much fraud and waste....too many pork barrel programs. The people in Congress are out of touch with the average citizen. I find it amazing that someone will spend millions of dollars to run for president....a job that pays $200,000 a year....and when they leave office, they are even wealthier. I don't think our so called "leaders" really care about the average John Doe or Jane Doe.

For anyone who is interested, you can Google "benefits of the space program" and find several sites which may answer some of your questions about why we should spend money on NASA. The space program has benefited many aspects of our everyday lives...medical advances, etc.
