I believe California cages are still made here - and the quality of their cages is why I will buy their cages. The powder coating is good and doesn't chip and I've not had any problems with the cage itself. There are also a couple of other brands that are still made here in the U.S. I refuse to buy any of the crap coming out of China. Too many of their products have been fatal for animals and humans.
We only use cages at night. The rest of the day they are on their perches that we make for them out of safe woods and they LOVE them. They have different size branches, which are good for their feet and they can climb down if they want. Since my fids are almost all potty trained, it is not an issue to have them have free will roaming.
I do know that a lot of the cages I have had would have paint flake with my macaws.
i haven't ordered anything from that particular company but i have gotten 2 cages from
qualitydiscountcages.com i ordered a large one for my G2 and then another a few months later for my U2. i have had them for a couple of years now and they are GREAT! and they don't charge freight. and once i emailed them saying that i would like to purchase some extra bolts because i wanted to take them apart a couple of times a year and take them outside to give them a really good cleaning and didn't want to lose a bolt or ruin one by striping it. they sent me an entire set of bolts for FREE! and they are quick quick quick.
Actually, we don't keep our birds in cages either - save for Grayson, the new guy. And I'm only keeping him IN his cage when I'm away or for night-night. Once he learns to stay in/on his "domain", I'll leave his door open all the time.
The cage I've "loaned" to Grayson was bought for Rosco and bought only because we realized that there might be some unforseen instance when we'd have to move them outside or someplace and we wanted something more accomodating than the carriers we use for vet visits. Buster still doesn't have a cage he can call his own, although I do have a couple of older sorta generic cages if it came to an emergency. Buster perches from one end of the house to the other. After 25 years of showing me I can trust him not to get into trouble, I treat him like another person. He's earned my trust. Same thing with Rosco as well as the recently dearly departed pals. It was only a spooking or maybe an earthquake that would send them flying. But it was rare when that happened. So, I confess, I'm not too focused on cage design or appearances. I just think that some of the cages in shops and bird specialty catalogs are WAY overpriced.

Great parrot tree, panama! The birds must love it and the lovely windows they have to look out of.
The first cage I had for Dakota looked wonderful and was inexpensive, but it was a disaster with the paint job. I almost lost Dakota to zinc poisoning with that cage. I was extremely careful with the next cage I got. I got a brand new California cage from one of the 2 local bird shops here. One charged $250 more than the other. No brainer where I got the cage from. I've been very happy with it.
