Blue Chip Stocks, Uh, I Mean Stamps???

Photobucket
High! Do you remember “trading stamps”? Back in the day, when you bought items at grocery stores, some drugstores, and gas at service stations, you received “stamps” (the size of a small postage stamp), along with your receipt. The number of stamps you got was based on the dollar amount you spent.

At home, you pasted the stamps into paper booklets, and once the booklet was filled, you could “trade” it for merchandise at your nearby trading stamp redemption center.

Sometimes, the item you were trading for didn’t require a full booklet(s), but just part of it, in which case the pages were torn out of the booklet and handed in, leaving you with the other pages for future “purchases.”

There were 2 basic trading stamps: S&H Green Stamps, and Blue Chip Stamps.

I’m mentioning all of this as it relates to some cherished, and still functional, camping stuff my old man and I got in 1971. Altho we collected both the “Green” and the “Blue” stamps, we had more of the Blue stamps (I think they were more prevalent in our area, Costa Mesa/Newport Beach, CA), so we went to the Blue Chip redemption center, and “traded” some of them for the following:
• 2 Sleeping Bags
• 1 Coleman Kerosene Lantern

A month or so later, once we were “on the road,” we traded the last of the stamps for a Coleman 2-Burner Portable Gas Stove (prior to that, I’d been cooking our meals over an open fire).

The sleeping bags DID wear out (no hi-tech fabrics, just heavy cotton canvas outside, cotton flannel inside, and cottony, Kapok-type insulation), but we’ve “recycled” them as “comforters” (unzipped, and opened out like a blanket); and the lantern and the stove STILL work fine!

So I’m wondering -- do you remember the stamps? Did you use the stamps? If so, what things did you “trade” them for? Do you still have those items? If so, are they in good-working order? And since "S&H Green Stamps" has morphed into "Greenpoints," while "Blue Chip Stamps" are still produced (altho I have NO idea which merchants use them now), are you presently using them? Stay High and Peace! Alison

Ecological Footnote/Footprint: How many trees were involved in the making of millions of stamps and booklets???

When my son was 2 years old we got his first tricycle with my S&H Green stamps. We got a lot of things that way. I remember we had a nice S&H redemption store.

I remember buying a baby gate for my first child with S&H Green Stamps - I didn't know about "Greenpoints" - I'll have to look into that.

I don't recall what I redeemed the stamps for but I do recall getting and using them.

The gas station used to give out glasses and one summer Sinclair Gas stations gave out large blow-up dinosaurs.

I was traveling-[work]-back then, and each city we went to, we had to rent a car. They gave stamps, don't remember what kind, but I collected a bunch, quickly! I remember we got some very nice things as we had more stamp-books filled then the average bear. As I re-call there were stores, and you could shop and pick out things.

The good ole days---or was it??

Cheers

I remember my Mom and Grandmother having S&H green stamps and buying things with them, but I don't remember what. I remember them getting them at check out at the store and us coming home and putting them in the book. I think there was even a store near us that they went to in order to redeem them.
I remember glasses in laundry detergent boxes.

I also remember towels came in a box of laundry detergent. It's funny now because it has been years since I have used powdered detergent.

I was saving them yet when my oldest was born. There was a redemtion store two towns over. First thing I got was a wooden high chair,Went through all 3 of my kids! Also remember getting milk glass snack plates with glass cups for parties and a milk glass pitcher.
As for free things, the best thing I ever saved was silverware I got from the Atlantic Richfield Gas station(later known as ARCO). Got 1 set each time you filled up.I was a teenager and riding through town was the big thing... so before it was over I had a setting for 12! Got them 40 years ago. Went in my hopechest for 2 years then got married and started using them. 38 years later I still use them. Down to 10 sets...LOL 2 handles broke off of knives and someone lost the others ( probably trashed by mistake...3 kids). Point being.... good quality for free, not like the ones you buy now!!!
