technical advice needed!

O.K. I'm working a nine block pattern. 4 of the blocks are made up of two triangles made from the two colors in the quilt. The pattern is written for 4 1/2" blocks and calls for 4 7/8" blocks to be cut into the triangles to make these four blocks. Unfortunately I'm using 5" blocks and this can't be changed so will 5 3/8 blocks work to make the triangle or do I need another number? (seams are 1/4 inch). All technical advice will be greatly appreciated. - Debbie

What is the finished size for the nine block? I can use EQ to give me the accurate size to cut. I think what you have given is the size of each square in the nine block. Is this correct?

If you are making 5" blocks, my calculator says for half-square triangles, you would need a 5 7/8" square to cut for two triangles. Hope this helps. elaine

I found this neat site that will calculate your half triangles. I also posted this site to Quilting Links.

For 5" blocks it calculated 5 7/8" blocks for half triangles, just as elayns calculator. I think I need one of those.

When ever I am making half square triangles I always add the extra 1/8, then trim the square to fit. Gives me "wiggle room". (For 5" blocks cut 6" squares, sew together, cut apart, trim to 5")
