you are right to check out insurance options before retiring.....your employer may have a supplement plan but now always the best choice.....mine was terrible for higher premium....worked in school system! I hve supplement insurance with Constitution Life which pays everything Medicare doesn't pay. Monthly premium is $188.00 a month ...a little pricy...but I am 70 years old and had some major surgery this year so feel like I got a bargain in the insurance considering the medical bills!!!
Goodluck with your choices for the future!
I have been retired for about 4 years. I have health insurance (incl. Rx insurance) and life insurance through AARP. I can't really remember having to pay anything except some excess for my chiropractor. My health insurance costs $142/month. I don't miss the $$$ because I never see it to begin with!
You're right to be doing your homework!
I have been checking out Humana and Secure Horizons.... Anyone have any comments on these??
All I know is that supplemental ins is very high when you only have SS to live on...I do not get that much SS so can't afford MORE ins. I just hope it will drop in price one of these days so that I can afford more ins. Thank goodness I've been pretty healthy, no major illness so far. Its that big "but" that worries me a LOT.
Thank you all for the input. I have a better idea now of costs.

I wil be turnilng sixty five neaxt year in sept. and will have to go on medicare.that is if it is still around...i get a small ss check of 658,00 and will lose about a hundred of that when i join, so I can't ever afford a supplement, it is a good thing i am health or i would be in deep do do.l.llll but i am not complaining about this health bill situation because i don't want people to have to pay for me if i can help it, i think about my kids being saddled with this mess for the rest of their lives...when will people take responsiblity for their lives.....i think it is great if you have a great ins. thru your company, but that eventually wil be taken away if this goes thru...all we can do is a lot of praying and calling on washington to stop this ungodly mess..ladyreader
I use an HMO called Texan Plus from Universal American. I do not pay any premiums (only the 96 or so that it taken from my ss check monthly). I have no copay for regular office visits, and I have prescription coverage for no additional charge. My prescrips will be 35 this coming year and not the 30. There aren't a huge number of doctors signed up and only one hospital that is convenient, but I avoid doctors as much as possible and only have two prescriptions, only one that is filled monthly, usually, so at this point I am fine with the drug plan. Good luck with your search. I did not like the deductibles on the regular Medicare from SS since I don't visit a doctor on any regular basis. I thought that the supplemental plans very high.
I am staying with this HMO for next year. Who knows what will be out there after that.
Again, thank you. I've decided to work another year or as long as the commission come in. Company Ins is $144.00 a month 20.00 co-pay, includes eye and dental plus a life ins policy. From what I see and hear I should stay working. for just a little longer.
Wise decision !!! The problem I dislike with medicare is the big deductible you have to pay at beginning of each year, plus the $96 monthly from your SS...I also have a suppliment Insurance with American Continental ,it runs me a little over $100 a month...so far this year I have only had to pay $72 out of pocket on Cateract surgery...but have insurance to help with my medicine through AARP.
I tell everyone since I retired I am Insurance poor...I sure wish I had continued to work to keep the insurance I had.
