Thanksgiving Traditions, Crafts, and Recipes.

Photobucket

Many in our garden family have tradtions for Thanksgivng that they do every year. Some have created new and fun filled ideas. Recipes, old and new, have become treasures for the Thanksgiving spirit. Many of the ingredients come from our gardens. Talents grow when sharing ideas for a table scape or a center piece. Please share all your ideas and special foods for the holidays. Many of us aren't able to travel to see our families during the holidays but we know we can come here and find some turkey good cheer.

Many blessings for the beginning of a wonderful & happy holiday season.

Cheers!

It's usually my job to make the pies for Thanksgiving, whether we meet at my house or go to my sister's. I can make pies in my sleep because I grew up being the baker for our large family. I started when I was 10, probably even younger. I remember being 9 and staying at my aunt & uncle's, while my mom had another baby, and I baked every day while I was there. My uncle was really impressed, which is why I remember it. I think I had some help from my aunt.

I usually make pumpkin pie from pumpkins left over from halloween. I also always make a cherry pie. After that, I will make pecan, apple, chocolate, mincemeat, maybe even lemon meringue, or coconut cream if I get a specific request. My late husband always requested coconut cream. An ex son-in-law really liked the lemon. I used to make a fair amount of banana cream pie, as one of my brothers liked it. A year or two ago I got a request for peach pie. One thing I haven't made in a while is rhubarb pie. Even longer since I made sorghum pie. We used to grow our own sorghum cane when I was a kid.

It's usually just my husband and myself for Thanksgiving, and more than likely we will go out to eat. Fortunately there are a lot of good buffets around. When I was growing up, my mother always had the holiday dinners. We laugh now at how at Thanksgiving she always had green Jello with spiced grapes and pecans crushed on top. For Christmas it was always her ribbon Jello salad.
I love rhubarb pie Sunny - make one for me anytime

Reading your replies sunny and Kay I am getting hungry. I like any kind of pie under the sun but cake is my favorite. I always like to back cake and my husband has requested Chocolate Pistachio bundt cake for Thanksgiving, Xmas and his January BD. We are invited out this year but like you Kay we usually go to a buffet and share dinner with all the other folks that like to eat out. I am not going through the fuss at home with all the trimmings but I will make a turkey breast.

I like sorghum molasses and I received my aunt's molasses cookie recipe. I bought a quart from the Mennonites. Awesome for everything and if you watch the food channel they are incorporating molasses in a lot of their recipes. I have to do a little research on that. Have a nice evening girlfriends.

Sugar Free Pumpkin Pie

1 baked and cooled 9” deep dish pie shell.
2 small packages of instant sugar free vanilla pudding.
2 cups of mile (I like to use one can of evaporated milk for part of
the milk. I think that it gives it a richer taste.
I cup of canned pumpkin - Plain pumpkin not pumpkin pie mix.
I tsp. pumpkin pie spice
¼ teas. Of nutmeg
¼ teas. Ginger
½ teas of cinnamon.
Blend all of the ingredients in a blender, or mix with mixer until smooth.
Pour into prepared pie shell and chill until set.

Notes from Ann:
I used a graham cracker crust. I used one can of reduced fat evaporated milk
I added extra cinnamon and nutmeg & added some vanilla to the mixture.
This recipe was given to me by a friend on eons: POW Sharon.
It’s wonderful and I hope that you enjoy it as much as I do.
It’s quick, easy, and a big hit and don’t forget the cool whip on top.

I've been looking for an egg free pumpkin pie recipe, have seen several but the one I tried wasn't that great. I'll have to try this one.

I am going to double the recipe and I bought the keebler 2 more helping graham cracker crusts that are now on the market. That way I can take a big pie with me to my friends for Thanksgiving. Please let me know how you like it.

Annie

Thanksgiving is pretty traditional in our family. I host the dinner with turkey stuffed with pork sausage stuffing, mashed potatoes and gravy, a vegetable, cranberry sauce. My daughter provides the dessert, my son the wine. There are 10 of us on alternate years, other years, like this one, my daughter, son-in-law and grandson spend Thanksgiving with my daughter's mother-in-law.

Every year I make a cranberry relish. With a meat grinder, grind 1 bag of cranberries with one orange, the whole thing, peel and all, and add 1 cup of sugar. Make it the day before, so the flavors blend. It will keep in the frig for days if you have leftovers.
