8 LBS.

I read once that the Average American gains 8 lbs. between Oct. 31st. and January 2nd.

What will you be doing different this Thanksgiving/Christmas/New Years to maintain instead of gain over this Holiday Season?

Or will you be throwing caution to the wind?

Don;'t have a choice: I eat about the same number of calories every week and count all the carbs ( I wear an insulin pump)
Portion control is my mantra!

Have a happy Monday, everyone

Ok I have often wondered?

Americans have Thanksgiving where you eat turkey and from what I gather here, lots of other fattening things. So how long does that last, before you put it all away and get it all out again for Xmas?

I assume that you all eat turkey again for Xmas (do you look like a turkey after the second one) and egg nog and Xmas Cookies. Do you buy lots of fancy candies (sweets) like the English do, our place will be littered with Turkish Delight and Quality street and chips and nuts and mince pies and suasage rolls. Then we finish off dinner with Xmas Pudding or Plum pudding and more mince pies or Sherry Trifle.

Can you share what you do? I might ask for recipes to do some thing differently for a change, and I am quite willing to share my recipes, but the Xmas and baking ones I have are definitely NOT healthy

Hi Elaine, Thanksgiving doesn't really last very long here. Pretty much one day of stuffing ourselves with turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, cranberry sauce, and pumpkin pie. I think people here like Thanksgiving because it gives them time to be with family and friends without the stress of gift giving & hub-bub of the holidays.

Then the stores open early for what we call Black Friday and we are into the holiday frenzie! Because the US is the "tossed salad" of the world, our people celebate in many different ways. Some honor Christmas, others Hannaka or Kwanza. Each have their own special traditions.

I have to think that most people here don't have turkey again for Christmas. Personally, when we can afford it, we have Prime Rib (beef), but ham is also popular. Anyone else out there is this great group care to chime in? What do you have?

This is so much fun to share with other countries. I can't wait until New Year's!!! So much variety in our county, let alone how other's celebrate!

Gotta love Eons for bringing us all together!

We are doing the Silhouette Solution. Calibrated food...5 meals a day...plus a sinceable meal in the evening. Complex carbs and protein has helped us break the addiction to simple carbs that break down immediately to sugar. I used to eat a big meal and be hungry again in an hour or two. No more. Check it out if you want. www.jointnt.com\jmdistributors

Well, I would like to say that I am going to be very careful, but it would be a lie. I will no doubt pig out on Thanksgiving. If it weren't for all the other pre Christmas parties with relatives and Church groups and such I would be ok, I think. I will try to eat more sensibly when I am at home. Perhaps make a big pot of that cabbage "free" soup. Mostly cabbage with tomatoes and other veggies. Still I do gain. On Christmas we have all kinds of goodies and Oyster stew, Pickles wrapped with cream cheese and dried beef. A cracker dip with shrimp and shrimp cocktail and creamed cheese. After the holidays I watch what I eat more carefully.

I think you should let loose on Thanksgiving day, but that has been ruined by every other group I belong to. I wish they would realize that I joined these groups (community, volunteer, religious, etc,) because of what they do. I don't want to eat every place I go!

Elaine T. Welcome to the group. In answer to your question I have to ditto what Poucachinha is saying which is "Food is everywhere." At work they have a Thanksgiving potluck, at church we have a Thanksgiving potblessing, and if you are part of other groups they think they need to have a Thanksgiving potluck too. Then if you have married children then you may have a seperate Thanksgiving dinner from Thanksgiving day to accomodate them not being able to come to your house on Thanksgiving. But the food does not stop there because then Dec. is close and all the Christimas potlucks/blessings/dinners/coffee cookie get-to-gethers start. It is one endless feast from holiday to holiday because after Christimas comes New Years with all it's parties and food traditions. But really it starts on Oct. 30 with Halloween trick or treat and the Harvest parties. So for Americans it is two months and two days of food, candy, and goodies. I am surprised the average weight gain is only 8LBS. LOL!!

I am halfway to the average 8 LBS, mostly from pie and chocolate. But, I did get on the treadmill and took a hike on the dunes so maybe I can get it under control before the Christmas cookies tempt. Our Christmas tradition has been a ham and salads waiting for us after Mass on Christmas Eve. The new thing we have been doing is trying a new recipe on Christmas Day- trying different ethnic slants or a food we don't usually make. There are always ham sandwiches if we fail. Paella may be the adventure this year. Snow is falling- will bundle up and get out there.
