Medical Care

Good morning Squeakers,

This week, I saw 2 great stories about healthcare on the Today Show and House Call with Dr. Sanjay Gupta of CNN.

For our members in and around the Philadelphia area, specifically Phoenixville, Pennsylvania, this is for you. Several years ago, Dr. Lorna Stuart left her successful medical practice to open a clinic, called The Clinic, in Phoenixville, PA. Other physicians, nurses, and clerical staff volunteer their time at The Clinic. Dr. Stuart's clinic sees patient's without insurance and does not put a price on a doctor's visit. They ask for a contribution at the end of your visit. This can be 50 cents, $1.00, whatever you can afford to pay, but you are not turned away if you cannot pay. Dr. Stuart and her staff are now seeing over 70 patients a day and they may have to find a larger building soon. Please Google Dr. Lorna Stuart's name or The Clinic in Phoenixville, PA, and you can read the story. If you or your family or friends live in the area, there is a caring clinic where you can be seen without insurance.

In Rhode Island, Dr. Andrea Arena and her partner opened a doctor's office and vowed to take care of patient's the way it was done 60 years ago. They also make house-calls. They have reformed the way they operate their practice so they can keep cost down and help their patients. Please Google Barrington Family Medicine, it is at 60 Bay Spring Avenue in Rhode Island. These may be 2 physicians you would like to see for your health care if you live in the area.

These 3 women are reforming healthcare. I wish other physicians would take notice and follow in their footsteps.

Thanks Sherrie. Maybe others in other states will pay attention and follow suit. I sure hope happens in my area.

I wish there was a practice like that here! We don't have insurance, can't afford it and even if we could we have pre-existing conditions and no one will insure us. Sigh.

I stumbled across an old article in Woman's Day. You can get free mammograms on National Mammography Day. It's already over this year but to find a clinic near you for the next one check out nbcam.org. For free heart health screenings go to sistertosister.org/health-tools/cardiac- screening. This one is available year round as is a skin cancer check got to aad.org/public/exams/screenings. Also check out aarpwalgreens.com/tour for free bone density scans, glucose, cholesterol, blood pressure and body composition checks. The aarp is a bus tour so you have to check to see when it's in a city near you. I live in Southern California and Stater Brothers Market also offers cholesterol and glucose testing free. The health fair at the market goes from store to store so you have to contact them to see when it is at a store near you. I have catastrophic health coverage with a deductible of $5K so I plan on using these free services in place of the yearly testing that my Doctor orders anyway.

It breaks my heart to hear about people who need care and can't get it. Not all areas have these services. Many people can't get to clinics.
I have insurance that tries not to cover some tests, after a fight, they cover. When I lived in England, we had National Health and it was wonderful. My son had surgery and all we had to do was show our card. We were always treated well and never had a problem getting appts.
It's a shame people here are so afraid of single payer health insurance. More and more people are losing their coverage or are being denied coverage due to pre-existing conditions. The cost of insurance keeps going up and you never know when a claim is going to be denied.
