I usually wait until after Christmas for the the sales.......lots of things half price. I have two birthday children in January so the sales are really good for me. It makes birthdays a gifts holiday and keeps Christmas a family and religious holiday.

I have no loyalty to any store. I watch the sale ads and buy when I can get what I want at the best price, including online.
The Boston Store in my town goes all out during the holidays. Some of their sales are bogus but they also have some super deals if you know your merchandise and prices. They also have the best holiday atmosphere of any of the stores here.
nubee: I have two children with birthdays in January AND a daughter-in-law. I usually take advantage of the after Christmas sales for them also.
I agree that, before Christmas, you have to really know your merchandise and prices. They try to fool you a lot.
Choices are limited here unless you want to drive to Missoula or Spokane, but I do pretty well at Penneys and Herbergers, but if I'm sending things out of town, I stick with Penneys in case an exchange is needed. I got a snowsuit for my 4 yo Grandson in CA for $32 ( down from $80) at a Penney door buster sale a week ago. I do the best on the day after Thanksgiving and the day after Christmas--I know what I want and go for it. Shopko often has good sales, too
I like to wear turtlenecks and find that Shopko has the best deals on those. Sometimes when they are on sale I will buy 10 of them. I used to shop at the Penney's warehouse but haven't been there in years. I wonder if it is still open.
I've purchased clothing, shoes, household items, you name it (for myself), at great bargains BEFORE Christmas! I try to stay out of the stores after Christmas, for personal safety! I do pick up half-price or less Christmas cards and wrapping paper at the drug store in the complex where I work. If I go in the morning, no danger of bring trampled!
Almost every major retailer is already offering great "pre-Black Friday" sales. I have a separate email address I use to sign up with all the stores I like so I get notice of special sales and deals. Many are offering free shipping right now. Plus, once I order something using that same address I get even more and better deals. My best deals come from JCP.com (JC Penney), Amazon, Sierra Trading Post (excellent for brand name clothes/shoes always discounted) and Overstock.com (can't beat their always-cheap shipping!) I think that in January Overstock.com will have fantastic deals on all the stuff that didn't sell during the holidays. Almost all of my shopping is done online. I love that I can read product reviews and easily get the specs/measurments/etc. of anything I need to buy. And no crowds and endless searching for items!
