WARNING: Diabetes & Colonoscopy

Had my first colonscopy recently.
With sedation, was a piece of cake.

BUT ....

The regimen prescribed to cleanse the colon prior to the procedure bears close watching.

255 gr. of Miralax mixed in 64 oz. Gatorade Rain ....
Drink 8 oz. every 15 min. until all gone.

BUT ... WAIT ...

Gatorade Rain contains 14 grams of sugar per 8 oz.

I could not believe a doctors office had prescribed this for me, nor that they were prescribing this for anyone!

Needless to say I was mortified.
No way was I going to drink this stuff.
8 oz. every 15 min. meant 64 oz. would be ingested in 2 hours.
That would be 112 grams of sugar ingested really fast.
Sh*t, ingesting that much sugar in such a short amount of time!!!! ... I'd be dead before they ever got to a colonoscopy!

Called the office, pointed this out ...and there was silence on the other end of the phone. That's when I knew I had their attention. Unbelieavably, NO ONE in the office had EVER considered the sugar content in Gatorade Rain (1st ingredient: water; 2nd ingredient: high fructose syrup)

I ended up using clear, flavored water instead of the Gatorade and it worked just fine.

Amazing.
Must read everything and ask questions.

BTW, my procedure was fine. Went off with no trouble at all. Sedation works wonders. Don't need another for 10 years. Yeeeeehhhhh !!!

Just goes to show you have to take responsibility for everything you put in your body. You can't just rely on the dr.'s and nurses to do it for you. I wonder about the prescription preps, like Golytely? I'll have to remember to ask my pharmacist next time I have a colonoscopy (in 3 more years).

When I had that procedure they had me take some nasty stuff that made me spend way too much time in the little girl's room. It didn't have all the sugar, just power.
Phrog...who thinks croaking better than preping for the colonoscopy

phrogkar, That's what it is suppose to do. The purpose of a colonoscopy is to clean everything from your bowels so they can get a good look inside.

And be sure to remind your doctor twice that you're a diabetic, the other colon cleansers they like to use, the phosphate stuff, can be a killer if you have the kidney problems associated with diabetes. And we all know that the common type-II diabetes drugs contain metformin and you should stop taking that 24 hours before a cat scan if an iodine based contrast drug will be used. Actually, the "official position" is 24 hours, but I've had x-ray techs tell me 48 or 72 hours is safer, metformin + iodine + high energy x-rays = permanent kidney failure.
