Storms Hit the UK

For the past two days we've had torrential rain in most parts of the UK and flood warnings have been issued to people living near the western and southern coasts as well as warnings of structural damage and trees falling. People are being advised to get as much as they can to an upstairs room.

Already gusts of up to 110MPH have been reported from the far south west (Cornwall) and Wales. With the rivers flowing towards the sea there is nowhere for the flood waters to go because of high tides and the winds blowing the sea inland. Several towns are already under three feet of water and that is expected to rise.

Although I'm a fair bit away from the coast (50 miles away) as I speak, here we have winds of 80MPH and more torrential rain. This is expected to last all weekend.

I know we don't have anything like tornados or hurricanes like Katrina - but severe weather is not something we are equipped for.

That's terrible! Had they been expecting the storms? Did everyone have time to prepare?

We were warned Monday that this weekend would be torrential rain, but the winds were only reported late Wednesday.

As far as preparations are concerned, few know what to do apart from putting sandbags on their doorsteps to stem the flow!

We in the east are not expected to get to much in the way of a storm but are forecast for plenty of rain over the next 24 hours with winds gusting up to 65 mph early Saturday morning. Nothing like the west and central part of the country will be getting

That is hurricane weather what you are describing with the only difference being the storm is not an organized rotational event with a name. Wow :( I can relate with these things defining my life starting with Katrina and ending with Ike...

What to do? Leave or stay? I hope people can hunker down and remain safe. And getting things to a higher level is excellent advice. Large plastic boxes help...

Just thinking about severe weather gets my heart racing. I will keep you and them in my thoughts.

My niece returns to London tomorrow after a two week visit home (South Africa). We have been experiencing unseasonal heavy rain and cold weather the entire time that she has been here. I feel so sorry for her.

There are hundreds of thousands of South Africans in the UK. So many of us have ancestral visas and call Britain our second home. As soon as kids graduate they head for the UK to get work experience. The thing that they all battle with is the dreaded weather! My younger son is returning home after five years in London.

We were literally shook out of beds this morning , so forcefull was the bang I either thought there had been a gas explosion in the block of flats where we live , or an airplane had come down , as we are 5 mins from gatwick airport .

I have been kept awake by the strong winds all night , but when I finally gathered my senses early this am from the shock of the bang relized it could have only been one thing lightning strrike to the building or a thunder bolt . In saying that I have lived through some pretty nasty storms in my short life in the UK but this one beats the tops , has UK been hit by a weather front more than what they are letting on ??? Remember the weather man who claimed that Britan wasnt to be hit by a hurrican in the 1980's and was told by a medium we were going to be hit by one , all this technology they have and they cant get it right even today .

It was just after eight this morning when i heard first crack of thunder, never seen so much life in the wife she jumped too.
I must admit i have never known a november like this one for topsy turvy weather.

I spent all night trying to get to sleep and the last thing I heard was the thunder and lightning storm around the same time Jon and Ninat.

My daughter drove up from Somerset this morning and she says there's a lot of debris around. She arrived here and immediately set off up to London (by train) for the afternoon so I didn't have an opportunity to question her further.

I think I might go back to bed until they return!

My sister is visiting from the UK and she seems to have brought us a rather unwelcome present of the British weather. Not high winds but torrential rain and very grey skies.

I must be a heavy sleeper or we didn't get the storm as promised, I've just crawled out of bed at 11:30am :-))) and I heard nothing and as far as I'm aware, neither did anyone else in the house. The sun is shining brightly but the wind is up though not to storm force. According to forecasters there is more to come though view link
