I can find only positive things about being nice. That is part of the world's problem today - not being nice!!!
Nothing wrong w/being nice, it is vital for interpersonal harmony.

There is absolutely NOTHING wrong with being nice. A smile, kind word, or a simple gesture of courtesy for most of us goes a very long way. I honestly try to be kind, considerate and respectful to folks - online and in the real world - until they show me my efforts are wasted and it's time to move on.
Absolutley nothing and it is a two-way street.
My gut agrees with the above. Nice, helpful, kind is default mode for me.
i would only caution that if you know you're in hostile territory (because people have shown their true colors before as Glam mentions), then be civil, be polite...but being TOO nice will get you dumped on. Sometimes there comes a time to draw a line in the sand: To say, "I won't tolerate being treated like you're trying to treat me."

I agree with everything said so far..
I agree with you feywon, being nice with good boundaries.....but in my experience some people don't trust nice people because they don't reallly believe they are nice..they think that they have an agenda and that they are phonies.....
That say more about them really, doesn't it???? Or the company they've kept.

I've been involved in several situations where a person I know, who is not a nice person, try to get co-operation from a company and had a very hard time getting what she wanted. It took a long time. When I dealt with this particular situation, I very easily obtained the co-operation I needed from them. A lot is to be said that you get more bees with honey (or something like that). I am a naturally nice, friendly, even-tempered person (snore). I don't need to fake it to get what I want from a company or a person. It is not my intent to consciously manipulate people. My life is pretty good, and I like people, so people like me. The world would be a MUCH better place if people were nice to each other.Eons has sure improved my life!
