Anyone here...........

ever do genealogical research? Is it just me or has ancestry.com annoyed you. I mean that these records are free and they swoop in put them on their site and you have to pay a fee to view and see if it's a relative of yours.

I do go the National Archives here in New York City (ancestry.com is free on their computers) but I could stay there for a week. I have some leads. I just wish the cemeteries would computerize their records and put them on their websites. Now that is something that Bill Gates could use his computer brain to organize.

I have an aunt that has been working on ours for several years now. I know she has used ancestor.com,but she has also used many other sites aswell.

dash, a few times a year ancestry.com does a free week or 2. That's when I jump in there. Sign up for their newsletter.

I've had some luck at view link They have a great forum, I even met a 3rd generation cousin, there. Also view link this is where geneology.net sprung from, has some name specific links.

I agree about cemetery's should have data bases on line. My family immigrated from Italy, most of what I need is over there, I will have to go and search the headstones myself, to go any further.

I get miffed at Ancestry .com. also. I'm just a dabbler - my cousin's ex-mil did a lot of research, but once my cousin and her daughter split up, she hasn't shared any more info with us

On my husband's side of the family, he has been lucky enough to have 2 cousins who did all the research - one on his dad's side and one on his mother's. I personally think it is too much work. His cousin Gordon went back to 1799 and wrote this book and it is just overwhelming. His cousin, Linda, didn't go back quite so far and her book is much easier to follow. And hers is set up differently. As for my family, we have some info back to great-grands and that is enough for me.

I dabble in it, but my daughter has been doing it for almost a dozen years as time permits for her and has gone back to when everyone got off the boat here, more or less. We still have a missing link on my dad's side that will take us back to when they came to this country in the 1600's. I guess we could join the DAR if we were so inclined. She has used Ancestry.com as well as the LDS family history center.

We have learned some interesting things about one person and another and find it an enjoyable pursuit..
