Hoar Frost

In January '09 we had a freeze over night after having some mild temps. The result the next morning was incredible, and unfortunately, like a lot of our winter weather here in North Texas, it was all gone by 10:00 AM.

I grabbed my camera, though, and spent a quick hour taking photos. This one was taken in my front yard. This is basically known as "hoar frost".

That is WILD.. I had never heard of HOAR FROST and have never seen ice crystals like this before. Wild indeed...

How nice! Hoar frost is one of those things where you MUST be at the right place at the right time. Very well done.

Must be tons of humidity to form that much frost. I remember hoar frost on the steal standpipe upon which sat the mailbox. 1948 and below freezing and I went out to the road to wait for the school bus as daylight was breaking and decided to lick it. My tongue was immediately glued to the pipe and it took the bus driver honking his horn to gain the attention of someone in the house who had to bring out a teakettle to loosen me from the pipe. My poor tongue was skinned and very sore and everyone had a great laugh at my expense.

This looks almost like a painting. I've seen lots of frost, but never anything that thick. I'll have to goggle "hoar frost".
