Flight

Flight

A jowly man tenderly wipes down
an outside table
at the Super Sal Kosher Market.
Nearby, a sign painter
draws palm trees
on the store window
then paints a young woman
walking on a beach.
All of us getting through the day,
our bodies made of elements from
long ago explosions of stars,
no one wanting to be reminded
of starvation, war,
asteroids on collision courses.
A young boy gets on a mechanical
plastic horse, his Dad puts in a quarter
and the boy holds on tight, rocking fast,
urging the horse past palm trees,
woman, sky,
the dark end of motion.

We're all in flight - some of us crash into buildings though, and our wings get broken.
