He joined the military when he was 16 and made four combat jumps into four countries during World War II.
Now, Henry “Duke” Boswell’s service that included Normandy and the Battle of the Bulge is being honored as he serves as grand marshal of the 2009 Veterans Day Parade Nov. 7 through downtown Colorado Springs.
The theme: “The Unwavering Force.” The 10 a.m. parade will run down Tejon Street from St. Vrain Street to Vermijo Avenue.
A crowd of 40,000 watched last year’s parade.
The highly decorated Boswell was introduced at a reception sponsored by the parade board this week.
“I am proud of my service in the Army. I am proud of the United States. I am proud of our troops serving around the world. I accept this honor for them and for the ones who are gone,” Boswell said.
Boswell kidded that as grand marshal, he’ll be up front, where he can finally see everything and wave to everyone.
“I’m short and was always in the middle,” he said. “I only saw soldiers all around me and I saw feet. I’m looking forward to this parade.”
When he retired as a lieutenant in 1963, after serving in Korea, Boswell taught in Colorado Springs School District 11.

Wednesday is Veteran's Day. Our nation will honor active members of the military as well as veterans. It marks the anniversary of the end of World War I.
On Tuesday, students at Mountain Ridge Middle School in Colorado Springs learned about the sacrifices veterans have made for our freedom during a Veteran's Day assembly.
Several Mountain Ridge students were honored for essays they wrote about our nation's veterans.
"It's important to honor veterans because they do so much for our country, giving us our freedom and they sacrifice their lives everyday for us," said student Tanner Silva.
Henry "Duke' Boswell, who served in the Army in World War II was scheduled to be the guest speaker. But, he was unexpectedly admitted to the hospital.
Boswell was the Grand Marshall of the Veteran's Day Parade in Colorado Springs last weekend.
Thanks for doing the research and posting this, elstunr.
Thanks so much for doing the history search Ron. What a man. What a hero. Celtflower, thank you for your post and for our awakening. k
Update On Henry (Duke) Boswell - Duke is home from the hospital. He's still pretty weak but is glad to be home. Thanks for your prayers.
thanks for the update, celtflower.
It is very sad to me, to see so many of our old warriors disappearing. I salute Lt Boswell, I already know he is a tough old bird...hang in there. Bill
I am so glad to hear that "Duke" is home and pray that he will be feeling better and stronger soon.
The years pass so quickly, it seems. The men and women who sacrificed so much for us are growing old. If we do the math, figuring no one could have been younger than 16 (and only then by being a terrific liar, in a good way of course) at the beginning of the war, that person would be 80 this year. We are losing them at the rate of 1500 a day. My dad is one of them, he is 85, in terrific health, but still... I want to keep him as long as possible.
