Weed Tax

So, I'm at the tag agency getting my driver's license address changed today, when in walks this young man who asks the agent, "Do you know where I can get a marijuana tax stamp?"

What?

We're in Oklahoma. Sure, the stuff grows wild here, but Oklahoma is too conservative to consider allowing the selling and purchasing of it, even for tax money.

And even better, this young man is out of school, doesn't have a job, wanders the neighborhood where I live all day, and hangs out with the 15 year old kid next door, whom I have also heard some stories about.

I am wondering, what did they say?

She said she thought about telling him he'd have to get it at the police station; but she ended up just saying she didn't know; that she'd never heard of anything like that. He insisted there was one, though.

There is a reason it's called 'dope'.

It would be an excellent thing to tax and he should be right that one exists. But too money much being made by it being kept illegal.

I did hear that it is being proposed to remove it from schedule I. I think it is the AMA that finally proposed that so that finally they can do some meaningful research on its effectiveness as a pain reliever.

The young man was correct. Since nobody asked him the reason why he needed the stamp, making assumptions about people is usually a mistake. So is gossip.

It took me about one minute to find this. Does anybody *ever* bother to look anything up?

From Oklahoma State Tax Commission:

Drug Tax Stamp
The Illegal Drug Stamp Act authorizes the Tax Commission to impose fines and penalties if illegal drugs are possessed and not stamped. Stamps are sold to dealers and a dealer may not possess marijuana or controlled substances unless the tax has been paid as evidenced by the affixed stamp. The Act does not provide immunity from criminal prosecution under Oklahoma law.

This act applies to any dealer who purchases, acquires, transports, or imports marijuana or controlled substances into Oklahoma. Stamps should be permanently affixed to the packaging or container transporting the marijuana or controlled substance as evidence that the tax has been paid. Tax is due and payable immediately upon acquisition or possession by a dealer.
