Can Happy Thoughts be Hazzardous to Your Health?

There's a new book out that maligns the power of positive thinking!

an Happy Thoughts Be Hazardous to Your Health?

"In her new book, Barbara Ehrenreich claims the relentless promotion of positive thinking can sometimes do more harm than good

By: Lori Hope

Barbara Ehrenreich“You've just gotta think positively and you’ll be okay!”

Like most who’ve faced a serious life challenge, that’s what I heard from one cheerleading friend when I had cancer.

“Oh yeah? You try thinking positively when you have cancer,” I wanted to say. Instead, I held my tongue, fearful of hurting or alienating her. It’s not that I didn’t want to think positively. Who wouldn’t want to convince herself that if she just got her mind right, the cancerous growth inside her would shrivel up and disappear for good? But, for many, forcing an upbeat attitude is not easy—or even advisable, according to Barbara Ehrenreich"

The whole thing got me to thinking. I looked back at my own diagnosis and thought, was I a positive thinker? Were you guys?

For me I think I came to the conclusion that while positive, I could more accurately be defined as having been realistic, and as informed as possible.

I tried to be proactive in my care, but remained aware of the truth at hand. For me it was more of an attitude of , "Okay, this is where I am. Now what do I do?" I remember one woman coming into my office shortly after I returned to work and she said, "Wow, I just don't know how you're doing this. I could never go through this!"

I just looked at her and said, "You'd have no choice! You face what's at hand, besides, we could all get hit by bus one the way home, yet we don't stay home from work for fear of the bus!"

I'd love to hear what you think about this?

I really don't think I was happy enough to tap dance around the room, but I tried to stay positive and go on with my life. I tried not to go into a deep depression, I tried to focus on things I needed to do at the time to heal. I am a three time cancer survivor, I can't imagine how I would have dealt with this disease without staying focused on what my needs were and what I needed to do. Had I gone into some type of depression, I may not have had the motivation that I needed. I have not read this book but I will try to get it.

I think that's what we have to do Whirly, I know that If had this feeling that if I stopped, I might now get up. I remember that actually I had a harder time dealing with it once the treatment was over. I'd been so busy, fighting this thing, and suddenly, I felt a bit lost. My doctor said that was the common feeling for those just having completed treatment.

I am convinced that keeping a positive attitude was/is a big part of what has brought me this far.

I do agree that it is folly to think that merely a positive attitude will cause the cancer to shrivel up and go away. But that is not what a positive attitude is all about, in my opinion. In my opinion, a person with a positive attitude doesn't wish away the negative things in life by being positive, rather he/she lets their positive reaction to the negative things in life drive them to see positive solutions and positive outcomes from the negative things in life.

I think my positive approach led me to seek and find the, for me, best possible practitioner to treat me, and led me to see the good in life as I went through the process. As we know depression is common among cancer patients and can be as debilitating as the cancer itself.

I am rambling now. But I think having a positive attitude gives one a better quality of life and also results in a better problem solving approach to the negative things in life.

BTW.... I just had a consult with my Oncologist and all is well!! PET/CT shows no signs of cancer and my blood levels are the best in 2 years. Life is Good.

Great news Bill!

I think what we've all described is a "positive attitude" and all found it very helpful. As you stated, Bill, that is totally different than "knowing" that a positive attitude is a cure, but I think it certainly can be a big part of the healing.
