Shanghi Girls

This book was so good! I'm usually into detective stories
but this was so good. It is about Chinese culture which I
decided to read because my nephew just married a girl from
Hong Kong. This book is I think true to its time and the
suffering these girls had to go through. They came from
a rich family and their father gambled away the money.
Being poor was a hard thing for them I highly recommend this
book.

I agree it's one of Lisa See's best! The story takes place 1937-1957. Pearl and May Chin are sold by their father to California brothers. The story tells of their journey to meet the brothers after the bombing of Shanghai. I gave it a 90 on the Slopok Scale.

Based upon seeing this recommended by you girls, I have just requested the book from the local library. Now I have three on hold. Wonder which one will come first. We will see.

Based on your recommendations, plus the fact that I loved Lisa's previous books, the novels as well as the family memoir, I just picked up the audio version of Shanghi Girls for my 5 hour drive to Phoenix tomorrow. I'm amazed that it was just sitting there on the library shelf, as if it were waiting for me. :-)

Back from Phoenix and thoroughly enjoying this book. The reader is doing a wonderful job and the story is so interesting. The only problem is finding the time at home to listen to the rest of the book as I usually only listen to audio books while driving.

Finally finished listening to this wonderful book. I was wondering if anyone else thinks there might be a sequel. The ending seemed like a set-up to a future book to me and I'm hoping I'm right as the story of Pearl's search for her daughter Joy in China would be fascinating!!
