Daffodil, I am not sure what the metal is on the egg, but this is what it looks like closed. In my hand is the insert with two minature perfume bottles, that sits in the middle of the egg. It was from my Aunt, so I am pretty sure it is not a reproduction by Joan Rivers, though I am sure it is a reproduction or maybe novelty item. Anyway, there are no markings on the piece.

The Egg is what is called an Antique Egg Perfume Bottle Etui. The term etui refers also to any case that contains small tools etc like the travel sewing kit.
The last example is the closest to your egg etui.
I think it is an item that is desirable.
