Obama's success will never be replicated

Charles Krauthammer 'splains last week's election. Gotta love it!

Election Day 2009 will scare moderate Democrats and make passage of Obamacare more difficult. Sure, it makes it easier for resurgent Republicans to raise money and recruit candidates for 2010. But the most important effect of Tuesday's elections is historical. It demolishes the great realignment myth of 2008.

In the aftermath of last year's Obama sweep, we heard endlessly about its fundamental, revolutionary, transformational nature. How it was ushering in an FDR-like realignment for the 21st century in which new demographics - most prominently, rising minorities and the young - would bury the GOP far into the future. One book proclaimed "The Death of Conservatism," while the more modest merely predicted the terminal decline of the Republican Party into a regional party of the Deep South or a rump party of marginalized angry white men.

This was all ridiculous from the beginning - 2008 was a historical anomaly. A uniquely charismatic candidate was running at a time of deep war weariness, with an intensely unpopular Republican President, against a politically incompetent opponent, amid the greatest financial collapse since the Great Depression. And still he won by only seven points.

Exactly a year later comes the empirical validation of that skepticism. Virginia - presumed harbinger of the new realignment, having gone Democratic in '08 for the first time in 44 years - went red again. With a vengeance. Barack Obama had carried it by six points. The Republican gubernatorial candidate won by 17 - a 23-point swing. New Jersey went from plus 15 Democratic in 2008 to minus 4 in 2009. A 19-point swing.

However if Obamacare passes, the worst damage will be done and it will not be able to be reversed. Obama will have suceeded in destroying our country.

Neither party seems to be able to grasp the idea that the electorate has no party loyalty. Nor does the electorate seem able to grasp the idea that neither party has any real interest in solving our problems, only in their own power.

Unemployment will remain high. The deficit will grow. Taxes will have to be increased. The war(s) will not be over. We are looking at a one term wonder.

Oh, Cape.....you do know how to get me all tingly inside. One term is too long and I'm still having a problem with "wonder", but I'm all a twitter waiting for 2010 and 2012.

MShadow , I agree completely with your analysis . As long as the electorate continues to buy the BS that one party is good and the other is bad and we continue to allow elections and politicians to be bought by whoever has the most money , we are going to continue to have the same corrupt , non-representative government that we have had for the last 50 years .

Oh xbor, thank you for your well wishes. Your "Holy One" is reaping what he has sown and it will just continue. Terrorist acts on American soil do not go over well with most people and that's exactly what happened at Ft. Hood under your idol's watch....and it was ignored by the military until it was too late on your idol's watch. Shame! It will just get worse because your idol is out of control. See the thread on Chicago Style Politics below. Obama is vindictive, shallow, and out of his mind!
