Lure of Cyberspace

As a geologist/ educator, I believe it is very important for kids to explore the natural world. Lately though, kids are so occupied with tv, video games, computers, etc. that they are not establishing a deep connection with Nature. Is anyone else concerned?

Oh yes, It really concerns me that my five year old grandson would rather be on his DS than just about anything else.

This fascination with technology starts so young. When I visit my grandkids in Boston, 2 girls ages 3 and 6 1/2, they know grandma is into nature and will be doing something outside with them.
My eldest granddaughter was showing me an app on her mother's iphone one day-- a game. Out of curiosity I asked her what it was about. She explained it to me and then wanted to play it with me. I had to admit to her that I wasn't really interested in it. She seemed disappointed but I explained that everyone has different interests and mine was sharing nature with her, not playing games on an iphone. I think grandma dropped a notch in her estimation, but what can you do. I think it is not the best thing to join them in this cyberspace fascination but offer them an alternative for balance in their lives.
