WHY

why do people who have diabetes tend to be in denial about their problem. My wife doesn't seem to understand the brevity of it all. She rarely will check her blood sugars, but she does take her insulin twice a day, by the pen. She strictly refuses to use a needle, even though I have offered to help her.

for me it is loss of control. This disease has controlled what I eat, drink what I can do on a daily basis. Maybe that is why your wife acts that way

With common sense and a grasp on reality, one can eat practically anything they want if they are aware of the amount of carbohydrate that they are ingesting. Carb control is vital.
The lady who refuses to check her BG levels is in need of some counseling as she is not only harming herself, she is punishing her family for her having the disease.
Everyone has the right to be selfish, since that means taking care of ones own interests. But when that selfishness involves her loved ones, then that is a pathological situation. She has no right to hold her family as emotional hostages for her self-neglect.
Sorry, my sympathy level for her is very low.

Her blood sugar levels need to be checked. How often does she have her A1C level checked? Is her blood sugar level staying pretty level or does she have highs/lows? Just keep encouraging her and helping her with her diabetes.

I think I kept my diabetes to myself because I don't like to have attention called to myself about having diabetes. In other post, you will see that it is irritating when people look at your plate and check out the food you eat or even say something to you about it.

@ SouthernCharm--your plate should not look any different. What you are eating is entirely your business and taste--no one has the right to criticize what you are eating--it is non of their business. If they do criticize ask them to pay your taxes, rent or whatever and get off of your back.
Feel free to eat whatever you choose as long as it doesn't overload your system with carbohydrates which is just a fancy word for sugar.

Right now I have escargot in the oven and a chunk of brie on the table--almost zero carbs. The 2 ounce homemade sour dough rolls are about 15 grams and the gewerztramier (sp) is very low. This will be followed by 4 oz of steak and sauteed green beans with tons more garlic and a tossed salad with some beefsteak tomato.

Eons was having issues, I thought i posted a note. Mainly i am wondering why soemone would use the needle when pens are portable, easy to measure and use, and able to be used in public...like at the dinner table through clothes. Regular syringes always feel like others might interpret it as illicit drugs.

Well trish it has to do with cost. the pen is way more expensive than regular insulin. Our Insurance Company can get us the insulin vails much cheaper. I just want my wife to take care of herself regardless of what she uses. And thats the hard part, convincing her before something bad happens.

Denial is one of the 1st problems. It takes different levels of time for each of us to come to grips. 2nd is what others think about us having Diabetes. I feel blessed on this one because I don't care what anyone else thinks about it. It is my problem and I own it and am living with it. 3rd our families may be supportive but even they don;t want to hear every little detail about the daily issues. My family is supportive if I am going through a problem period and am working it the way I should be.

I have a fear of needles and when I was put on insulin I thought it was a death sentance. I still don't like them but find a way to give myself up to 5 shots a day. I refuse to let this hold me back from the things I want to do and enjoy doing.

We all have stories that we can tell about what we have gone through but each one is geared to an individual. Be there for your wife when she needs you. Encourage her to educate her self and to learn so that she can be in control of her own situation. I also love this site and have learned many things and met some great folks.

You can get your doctor to order you the pens all he/she has to do is tell the insurence company you have a fear of needles and it is the only way you can take your insuline. They will cover it then. It all lays in your doctors lap. But the doctors get kudos for ordering the cheapest stuff but they can order the pens if they believe yopu need it so make them believe you.
