I know I've raved about it. Here's a funny thing - I so enjoyed this book I loaned it to a friend who shares similar tastes to mine. She absolutely couldn't get into it. She thinks she's have "reading doldrums" right now but I figured it anything would get thru it would be The Help.
Funny, isn't it Mudqueen??
tnbopeep, if your friend is in the doldrums, suggest SOLOMON vs. LORD. Sleazy but oh such fun! I heard about it from you.

Your friend is missing out on a good read, tnbopeep! I am so loving it that i am reading it a few chapters at a time so i can savor it and make it last longer.
My friend is an otherwise sensible person - I don't understand The Help problem. Yes Rapa, I just finished S vs. L. It was mailed to me by one of our generous members here when she heard that my library had lost their copy. It WAS a fun read. Good suggestion, I'll pass it on to her! And it's not THAT sleazy - I read WAAAYYY more sleazy stuff than that!!! LOL...
bopeep, that is one reason I've been holding off reading The Help, I'm afraid I'm going to be like your friend. LOL
And of course, now I'm curious as to exactly how sleazy S vs L is.... rotflmao
I'm picking up my reserved copy this afternoon. After all the good reviews, I'm hoping i will enjoy it.
I am about half through "the Help". Very good book. I was about 8 years old at the time the story takes place. Since I grew up in a northern state, middle class small town, I never saw a Negro in person (as referred to at that time). I remember the civil rights movement. I'm glad this country has come a long way (but could be better) in these regards.
Finished "The Help" last night. I enjoyed it very much. It's hard to believe that this type of situation existed in this country less than fifty years ago. I grew up in Cleveland, Ohio during the 50's-60's, and the civil rights movement was not discussed in our home. It wasn't til I went to college that I became more aware of the civil rights movement and desegragation. The US has made significant progress with this issue, but I agree, there is still room for improvement.
My dentist who happens to be black, recommended "The Help" to me. We seem to share a common interest in fiction books and we usually talk about what we have read when I see him. After finishing "The Help", I had to go back to my dentist for a recheck from some dental surgery and we discussed the book. He feels the children of the characters in the book are probably doing the same jobs under the same conditions in Jackson, MS. I really found that hard to believe. I said we have come along ways by electing a black president and he disagreed. Interesting. I really liked the book and felt it was very well written and even though it is fiction, I believe every word because I have know woman like were portrayed in "The Help".
Connie,
I think your dentist is right about the current situation in Jackson. Before I retired, I worked with several insurance agents who lived in MS. And, in my opinion, MS is lagging way behind in racial and women's equality. For the most part, it is still a "good old boy network".
