I agree that is why I moved from NE last year. I lived in Brockton. I love my new home in WNC.
Welcome Single [hi, loves]. We are in for a l-o-n-g wait, girl! I already have 7-8 lists of plants to research over the winter and the ground isn't even frozen yet!

If you come up with a fast climber for my trellis in the shade let me know !

imjac--There are a couple of clematis that will grow in light shade. How much shade would you say you have: part? light? full?

I'd say part to full. The front of my house is north facing. That's where the trellis is. It's the entrance to the side yard. Plus we have pine trees that just about blocks any sun that tries to cut through. There is a small amount of dappling sun but not much. The trellis has been up for two years. We thought English Ivy would be the answer but we have it everywhere. I'd like to have something more interesting.
I do have some clematis in my backyard in light shade . They are thriving.
Too bad there wasn't such a thing as an impatiens vine ! That would be perfect.

Single-- we lived in rental apartments in Connecticut for eight years and I have to say, I would have loved to have had a garden there, as the soil was so much richer than here in Florida. Your growing seasons are shorter but in some ways you have better gardening conditions.
Hi, beachbunnie--I should have checked here earlier. Welcome to the group. We certainly do have a wide range of growing conditions present among the membership. You'll be able to keep us northerners sighing in envy by telling us what is growing all winter long.

Idamay-- everything is growing in Florida this time of year, including the weeds! Our lawn is a beautiful, deep green, tho we do have to water it constantly-- the beauganvillas (I know I didn't spell that right) are all shades of red, purple, pink, and orange-- my firecrackers are blooming as are the cuban buttercups. I recently visited the botanical gardens in Naples, Florida and posted a few photos here, if anyone is interested.
Friends--BB's pictures are on her home page if you'd like to go take a look. [I smiled about the art!]

Hey imjac - Perhaps you could try a climbing hydrangea. It is not a fast-grower but it does very well on a trellis in the shade. Here's a link to more information:
