Do you agree?

Depends.....are you saying we should be tolerent of everything??? Do you really believe that would make everyone happy?? No...I don't think so. But I guess everyone can't be the same. There are some things I will not tolerate. Also...just for the record....I have seen some very educated people that were dumb as a rock.

definition of tolerance used in this thread.. By WIKI "Toleration and tolerance are terms used in social, cultural and religious contexts to describe attitudes which are "tolerant" (or moderately respectful) of practices or group memberships that may be disapproved of by those in the majority. In practice, "tolerance" indicates support for practices that prohibit ethnic and religious discrimination".

I was educated at a Baptist University; does that count? I agree with Annieoak that "education" doesn't mean someone can think clearly or efficiently. And there are some things I won't tolerate, either, though I'm more tolerant than a lot of people I know because I strive to understand where people are coming from instead of just judging their words or actions reactively.

For me, reliance on God + loving myself and others = happiness

Yes your right annie in that one can be edutacted formally; but yet be dumb as in emotional IQ or lack of common sense.. Which as GG (I believe) so aptly formerally stated is "not so common" Ofcoure there is the saying that "ignorance is bliss"

Ah, but what does WIKI say about "education"? I've known more than a few very well educated people who were, how should I phrase this; oh right, stupid! As one example; knew an English major whose writing would be considered illiterate by the uneducated.

"Stupid" people are very sure about all the stuff they think they know; ignorant people, on the other hand, usually know what they don't know. And it is often the people with pretensions to knowledge that are the least tolerant.

Then again what do I know?

Xquills your right about "stupid" people in that they tend to deal in absolutes..(closed minded) I will admit when I'm ignorantr about something & want to learn... Or in some cases say that just doesn't interest me & seems to have no bearing on my life.

I find it hard to tolerate those who constantly point fingers at others and call them stupid.

There are a few sayings about that "when you point a finger at someone else, there are 4 others pointing back at you" Or in the Eric Clapton song..."Before you accuse me, take a look at yourself. I have noticed that the less educated & less tolerant tend to lose their temper more readily. Soo in essence they do appear to be less happy....

To prosper in the 21st Century, one must remain educated and follow the chosen occupation where ever it goes. For too many people, the response to a job loss is to retreat to a real (or imagined) mountain top and wait for the day employment finds them.

With all the television shows available on cable, I don't know of one that deals responsibly with the Great Recession and its casualties. To begin with, the day of Bubba has passed. It might seem cute to flaunt your lack of education, but cute doesn't make it in the job world. Equally lost are those who went to school years ago, but who never kept pace as the job world morphed every digital generation (every three years, computers become twice as fast and half as expensive).

Was is tragic is that America has the best adult education system in the world. Community Colleges and Technical Schools are open to all and none of them are all that expensive. As for 4 year schools, many have on-line courses perfect for those partially or fully employed. For all that, only one show on TV touches the subject, but it makes a joke of education at a time when education is anything but funny.

I saw a far more powerful image of education when I taught GED in Juvenile Corrections. More often than not, the graduates were the first in their families ever to finish high school in any fashion, and those families that ventured inside the barbed wire fences couldn't be prouder. Interestingly, the occupation that most of them dreamed of having was architect because they wanted to build things, not tear them down.

By the way, that old saw about "educated people being incompetent" is more myth than reality. All it does is reinforce the notion that there is nothing wrong with the job seeker's lack of education. The fault lies with the job;.
