Happiness can be so flighty

Last Sunday by friend and I choose a different restaurant to go out and eat. Since this is our once a week outing we enjoy catching up on all our weekly problems and despairs with the way the city has become with the way it is being run. This time she decided I should go to her area(which is about 26 miles away from my house) so since the gov. decided that every Sunday they will open the expressway sans stop lights, it's easy to get to her place in 15 minutes rather than 45 that it usually takes. We enjoyed the food and the gossip between us and then stayed to listen to the Mariachi (Mexican troubadors) for a while. It was great to sit there sipping out little jigger of Tequila and relaxing. People were sitting around us at other tables enjoying themselves, eating, drinking, and laughing. As I looked around me seeing this reastaurant so full of people I couldn't help thinking where was all the depression talks that others keep speaking about. But with the happy music it quickly became erased from my mind.
I took my friend to her house and started towards home but in her suburb the streets have been paved with cobblestones and they try to give the area the aspect of an old colonial village with Spanish homes and cobblestoned streets. I never care for all that rattling that the cars make going over them. But friendship makes you forget things.
So I clunked my way towards getting out of there and taking the hiway back home. As I almost got to the paved road, my car bumped hard into something from underneath and I thought I probably went over a lose rock because I never saw anything obstructing my path. Since nothing seemed to be wrong I got onto the hiway and continued on my way home. As I opened my garage and got into the house I saw that a lot of smoke kept coming from under the hood of the car but since it was dark by now and I had a "nice" feeling from that afternoon, I decided to leave it for the next morning.
Well when I went to see it the next day, the floor where the car stood was flooded with oil!!
I had to call the tow truck and now they tell me it will cost me over $650.00 Dlls. because the Carter( oil pan) was destroyed and when they start the motor they will see if it didn't do any damage to it!!
I know my car is 12 years old with only 50,000Km on it which isn't a lot and in great condition. Some tell me to buy a new one but why should I? It's still runs good?? This was something that was caused by the lack of repairs in the city streets not because the car was bad?? And there's always repairs to be done here. A moment of happiness now has turned into such anguish!!

Zoe, I am so sorry about your car! I hope it can be fixed and give you another 12 years of service. At least you had a nice afternoon with your friend: that may have softened the anguish just a smidge...

Wishing you sunshine and new oil pans!

Zoe-

I'm sorry you're having trouble with your car too! Seems a bit unfair- as the condition of the road certainly had a lot to do with the damage that was done. Hopefully all that's required is a new oil pan.

Glad that you had a nice time with your friend- and, you've a new story to share!

Good luck with the car-

Hi Z~

I would write a letter to The City in question and report the damage to your car, the place it happened and if you can...get a photo of the spot it happened at.
Include the time and the date and even the circumstances of visiting your friend, which you wish to do again without concern of damaging your car. Send along with it your bill or copy of the estimate of repairs. Send a cc ( carbon copy) to the roads dept and the legal dept. and ask them to reimburse you for damages.

They might just send you a check without you having to engage a lawyer.

I like to give practical advise...as well as sympathy.

Go for it, girl!

Love,
Karen

It's a good sign that the garage floor was flooded with oil. That means, of course, you had oil in the engine when you shut it off. Plus, it was running, though perhaps a bit hot. Blip the key and see if the motor turns over. That would mean it didn't seize up, and you're probably fine. Not a good thing, but probably not the end of the car. Six-fifty to replace an oil pan? Is that pesos? Or dollars?

That's dollars Mike!! It's $8775.00 PESOS at the rate it's now @ 13.50 pesos=1.00 U.S. dollar!! they try to really stick it to you!! Even tho the cost of living down here is low they keep comparing with American the dollar!!

I didn't move the car Mike. got scared and the tow truck came and took it so they're working on it at the agency :-(

Thank you Karen for the suggestions but in this country(Mexico) nobody takes responsibility for anything especially the government!! It's a different world than ours. there's a saying: scratch yourself with your own nails!!" LOL

Cali and Sherri-- thanks for the moral boost!!

.......................ooooh bummer, that was the danger I had been facing with my former beautiful little economical 03' Buick Century, while trying to find dirt tracks I could follow to find wildhorses back into the Nevada wilderness, that are now solved with the 06' 4x4 Hummer H3 with protective skid plates under it. No more broken engines from high rocks. Sorry you are rather helpless down there at times mi tia Zoe, but mostly glad you are alright...........buena suerte, tu sobrino Cisco...

Woe is you. Sorry. Don't forget, when one door closes, another opens. I would take the advice rendered to write the City and enclose a bill. It's a mundane task, but at least you have the satisfaction of having tried to receive justice.

I wish I could do that megala but in this country ( Mexico) they just throw them in the wastebasket when you write letters like that.LOL Life is very different from our United States. We are very fortunate no matter what.
I'm still without a car since they called me last Saturday that due to the "Holiday" Monday, they will not be working on the car and will call me Tuesday. But do you think Tuesday they will work on the car after partying all week-end???LOL Such is life!!

At least my girfriend took me shopping for food so I'm set for another week!! LOL
