Say Hi & AARP Book

Hi Everyone,

This room is pretty quiet. It feels like everyone is hibernating. Just want to say hi and I got a question. Have anyone brought the book advertised at the back page of the AARP Bulletin called "Your Body Can Heal Itself"? If you do, is it a good book? It is all about food that we can eat to prevent diseases. If you have the book and have tried the info, does it work?

Glanced at the promo for the book, but I don't want to eat "right." I'm still hanging on to some youth (at 70) and plan to depart when it's my time. So there... ;)

Efolk, I've seen that same ad before. Did you notice how it teases you without giving any real information? There are probably books similar to it at most book stores and health food stores that you can actually pick up and read segments of so you know what you're spending your money on. Or, check out the local library -- the price is right at the library.

Xradio, you are right. I can go to the book store and just enjoy myself. The reason I asked is because I went to the doctor for my blood pressure medication renew. I am borderline high blood pressure. She told me to take one aspirin a day and I was extremely surprised by her suggestion. I know of a person who has done it and had his blood so thinned out, that he almost died from excessive bleeding. I went online and found that I am not a candidate for such dosage. Besides, I rather die than become a pill-aloholic. I hate doctors, they really don't know enough. I went online and find that some foods has high level of salicylic acid which is what aspirin has. I bought green peppers, mushrooms and tomato. I like cantaloupe, blueberries, almonds and peanuts. I also use a lot of curry powder in my cooking. It is a lot better to enjoy good food than to swallow pills.

Hi Everyone. I have a couple of books that tell me what foods are best to eat for different health
problems and I find that it does work but it takes time. Three months is my normal time frame
for it to make a big difference.
I also bought the book Eat Right For Your Blood Type by Dr. Peter J. D'Adamo. When I
first read this book I was not sure about it being a good idea but the longer I follow it the
better I feel.
I am an Organic Food person and believe Organic is far superior to what they now pass off as food
in the U.S.A.
I am well but busy and hope everyone else is also.

Tawny,

Thanks for the information. I will definitely go to the book store this weekend to look it up. I prefer food over medication and I am also an organic person, as much as I can afford the cost. A few years ago, I had carpal tunnel and my fingers curled up every morning when I woke up. It took to massage them to make them uncurled. My doctor told me I had two choices. One choice was to have a surgery. The other choice was to eat a lot of grape fruit. I followed the second choice and fell in love with grape fruit. It worked and my carpal tunnel was gone. I truly believe in doing it the natural way.

Did the doctor tell you why the grapefruit would help your fingers? I am just curious.

Twany,

It was at least 10 years ago, I forgot what it is in grapefruit that helps carpal tunnel. This fruit has many benefits. When I lived in Texas, I ate it everyday. It was inexpensive in Texas and I could buy a big sack about 20 of them for about $0.50 each. I am going to do some research and let you know.

twany,

I have done some research and couldn't find a direct connection. But I do find that grapefruit is anti-inflammatory. To treat Carpal Tunnel, anti-inflammatory drugs are used. Before I knew about grapefruit, I was taking Motrin which required me to have food in my stomach. It was too difficult, so I switched to grapefruit. It took a lot of grapefruit for it to work. But since I love it, at one time, I was eating two daily. It is known grapefruit can make some drugs stronger, it gets a bad rep. Many people are avoiding it because of that. If a person is not taking a lot of medications, grapefruit has a lot of nutrients.

Here is the section about grapefruit and its anti-inflammatory effect from one of the links:

Why eat a Grapefruit?

Studies have shown that the grapefruit can help in the reduction of cholesterol. They also contain an acid called salicylic acid which is similar to a component of aspirin. Salicylic acid is used for skin conditions and is a key ingredient of creams and remedies that are applied externally, for example on warts, acne and corns. Salicylic acid can also be used as an anti-inflammatory and so it can help with arthritic conditions when ingested. This anti-inflammatory effect can also help with easing the effects of throat and mouth infections.
